Dan graduated from F. J. Reitz High School in 1941 and Indiana State University in 1943. He was on the Reitz bowling team and had a series high of 747. He served in WW II as Gunnery Instructor for the 3036th Army Air Corp, 1943 – 1946. He owned and operated Kissel Printers from 1946 until his 1984 retirement. He was involved with Boy Scouts of America for 55 years, serving as Scoutmaster for St. Boniface and Sacred Heart Troops. Dan joined the West Side Nut Club in 1946; was Fall Festival Chairman in 1954; “Dan Kissel Vote No Award” was established in his honor in the mid 1960’s and is still in effect. Joining the West Side Optimist Club in 1963, he served as Optimist President in 1967, Optimist Lt. Governor in 1972 and Indiana Optimist Governor in 1975-76; was named Indiana’s Optimist of the year in 1974 and served on several Optimist International Committees. Dan received the Sagamore of the Wabash award from Indiana Governor Robert Orr in 1976. He enjoyed IU basketball, Cardinal baseball, playing Clabber, and watching birds and wildlife.
Along with his parents, Mr. Kissel was preceded in death by his sisters: Mary Lee (Joe) Reis, Shirley Williams, and Angela “Tootsie” (Kenny) Lilly, brother: Jerry Kissel; daughter: Sandy Hufnagel and infant grandson Luke Sparrow. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Jean (Lottridge) Kissel; two sons, Daniel,II (Iris) Kissel of White Bear Lake, MN and Steven (Mary) Kissel of Evansville, four daughters, Jean Kissel of Longmont, CO, Susan Townsend, Nanette Kissel and Kathy Brown-Sparrow all of Evansville: twelve grandchildren, John (Jill) Heath, Brian Heath, Kristy (Tony) Hooper and Jenny (Nate) Kemper, Megan Kissel, Jennifer (Nicholas) Cassin, Natalie Kissel, Andrea Kissel, Nick (Stefanie) Brown, Kayla DeWeese, Zach Sparrow and Jessa Sparrow, eight great-grandchildren with another due in October; sisters Delores Raley, Evelyn Smith, Florence (Ron) Saltzman; brother, Richard (Ethel) Kissel, sister-in-law, Aileen Kissel, brother-in-law, Fred Williams and close family friend, John Brown.
The family would like to extend special thanks to Deaconess Hospice, Dr. Uloth and the entire staff of Parkview Care Center. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, the Muscular Dystrophy Association or F.J. Reitz Big Blue Boosters.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, June 6, 2012 at St. Boniface Church. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery with military rites. Friends may visit from 9:00 AM until service time on Wednesday at the Church
