An Evansville native, Carl graduated from Reitz high school in 1939. He worked as a tool engineer for Hoosier Cardinal, General Electric, Benerson, and Evana, with the bulk of his time spent at Benerson. His intense patience and attention to detail made him an unparalleled engineer and demanding manager, but he was always welcome on the manufacturing floor by his employees because he was never afraid of work. He loved his job, but his true love was his wife Betty (Bowden). He loved her even when they were teenagers and (more than likely, though he would never admit it) befriended her brother Jim in order to spend more time with her. They married young and enjoyed 71 years together. His children Steve and Susan were raised in a house where their friends were always welcome – assuming they would follow the rules. Carl was strict, but loving and soft-spoken. He was slow to anger and quick to forgive.
He was an unparalleled stamp collector before macular degeneration robbed him of most of his vision. He loved photography and developing pictures with various tints and treatments. He excelled at any hobby that required patience and detail, like building ships in bottles, making trees from twisted wires, and making Christmas ornaments with beads, sequins, satins, and ribbons. Christmas was his favorite season of the year, and he approached decorating for it with the same methodical nature with which he did everything else – but his joy was evident in his off-key singing and constant smile. He loved to give gifts so much more than to receive them. His quiet laughter and dry wit will be sorely missed.
He is survived by his wife Betty, daughter Susan Smith, son-in-law Ray Smith, son Steve, and daughter-in-law Pennae Fuchs, as well as his grandchildren Noah, Anna, Kate, Rebecca, and Amanda, and his great-grandchild Sabrina.
Services will be 11:00 AM Tuesday, March 1, 2016 at Alexander West Chapel, with burial in Alexander Memorial Park. Friends may visit Monday from 4:00 to 8:00 PM at the funeral home.
