The Greatest Generation has lost another remarkable soul. On Wednesday, January 29, 2025, at the age of 99, Raul Ramalho peacefully passed away, joining the Lord.
Like many of his generation, Raul lived an incredible life. He grew up in New Bedford, Massachusetts, during the Great Depression, served honorably in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and eventually settled in San Diego, California, where he raised a family. During his military service, Raul worked as both a mechanic and a gunner, earning honors for his role in three battles.
Proud of his Portuguese heritage, Raul cherished family gatherings, music, dancing, and travel. He was preceded in death by his parents, Augusto and Maria de Lourdes Ramalho. His love for the ocean, first sparked during his time in the Navy, remained a constant throughout his life. In later years, he found joy in taking cruises, finding serenity on the open seas.
Raul embodied the values of his generation. He believed a firm handshake meant something, that respect was earned, and that right and wrong were clear. He lived simply, appreciating even the humblest meal. A man of discipline, he stayed healthy by walking every day, always opting for the stairs. He never owned a credit card, never quite mastered a cell phone, but remained informed, reading newspapers and staying engaged with the world until the very end.
When he passed, his sister Helen was by his side. Nurses recall that she read scripture to him and prayed with him just before he went to sleep. For this, his family is deeply grateful.
Raul will be dearly missed. He is survived by his sons, Gerard and Raul, former wife, Maria Elena, daughter-in-law Nancy, and his grandkids, Olivia and Tommy.
May he rest in peace.
