On January 27th, 2020, we lost one of the best. At the age of 82, Charles David Wasson passed away at his home in Valley Center, CA, with his loved ones by his side.
Charles was born on June 20, 1937 and was raised in Coffeyville, Kansas. He graduated from the University of Colorado in 1960 with a degree in Petroleum Geology. In 1970 he received a Master’s Degree in Financial Management, from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA.
Charles faithfully served our country for thirty years in the US Navy as an engineering officer. In that time, he attained the rank of Captain, and oversaw the operation, maintenance, and construction of all classes of steam and nuclear-powered naval ships and submarines. Following the navy, he continued work specializing in aircraft carrier maintenance. In his “retired” life, he spent time as a consultant and expert witness in asbestos-related litigation matters based on his extensive knowledge of, and experience with, ship maintenance and equipment. In his “retirement” doing consulting and expert witness work, like in all other aspects of his life, Charles was highly regarded and respected – by all on both sides of the aisle even within the adversarial legal system – a true testament to his exceptional work ethic, and his honesty, integrity and high character.
Charles was married thirty years to his wife Donna and both spent many hours enjoying the outdoors. He was very athletic and was an avid runner, swimmer, and biker. Charles spent much time in his workshop restoring old player pianos and reproducing pianos. Charles was a man who was always busy accomplishing his goals and aspirations. In his later years, a dog would always be found by his side whether it be on a walk to the mailbox or watching a football game.
Charles Wasson made an impact on many people’s lives. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Margaret and Charles Fredrick Wasson, and his sister Charlene Bishop. He is survived by his wife Donna Wasson, his two children David Wasson and Katherine Weidmann, and his two grandchildren, Mackenzie and Matthew Weidmann.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in his name may be made to the American Lung Association.
