George was born in Pierre, South Dakota to Floyd Burger and Leona (Clark) Burger on June 30, 1937. He graduated from Gettysburg High School in 1955, and enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served in multiple locations in the Airborne arm of the Distant Early Warning System used during the Cold War. Upon his discharge from the Navy, he returned to South Dakota where he met and married his wife of 61 years, Lois (Wutzke) Burger. The couple re-located to Casper, Wyoming shortly after their marriage, where George worked in a variety of positions. He earned his is Bachelor of Arts degree in 1971 from the University of Wyoming. He then began a long career working in the Civil Service in Logistics for the USAF, where he worked on many significant programs including the B2 Bomber and the Predator. During retirement, the couple re-located to Rotonda West Florida. George was an active volunteer in many organizations in the Rotonda area, including Englewood Meals on Wheels, the Rotonda West Association, and the American Legion Post 113 where he served as Captain of the Honor Guard. In addition to his numerous volunteer activities, George was an avid golfer, a classic car enthusiast, a history enthusiast, and a keen observer of current events.
George is survived by his wife, Lois (Wutzke) Burger of Rotonda West Florida, his son, Mark Burger and grandson Greg Burger of Cincinnati, Ohio, his daughter Michelle (Burger) Webber and son-in-law James Webber of Shelby Township, Michigan, his granddaughter Kristen Webber Rosenburg, grandson-in-law Ryan Rosenburg and great-grandson Julian Rosenburg of Houston, Texas, his grandson Austin Webber of Rochester, Michigan, his brother Robert Burger of Guymon, Oklahoma, and his brother Floyd Burger of Dillon, Montana. He is preceded in death by his parents Floyd and Leona Burger, his brother David Burger, and his brother William Burger.
A small interment ceremony (invitation only) will be held at Sarasota National Cemetery on November 13, 2020 at 10 a.m. A funeral service will be held at Faith Lutheran Church in Rotonda West Florida at a future date due to COVID 19. This service will be followed by a Celebration of Life at the American Legion Post 113. Information regarding these future events will be publicized when the information is available.
