Robert was born November 16, 1948 in San Francisco, California. He grew up in the Mission District of San Francisco with his younger brothers Michael and Stephen. After graduating from St. Ignatius High School, he attended Loyola University in Los Angeles where he was a part of the Air Force ROTC and his greatest joy was working on the classical music side of the college radio station KXLU. After graduating in 1970 with a degree in business, he was stationed at Lowry Air Force Base in Denver, Colorado. While there, he met Pamela and they married in 1971. After a tour of duty in Thailand and 4 years of active duty, Robert switched to the Reserves from which he retired after 20 years of service as a Lieutenant Colonel.
Robert and Pamela began raising their family of three children in Phoenix, Arizona, but career opportunities for Robert took them to Encinitas, California in 1982. He pursued a career in purchasing management in the electronics industry and served as president of the San Diego chapter of the National Association of Purchasing Management. Robert also took an active part in his new city. He advocated for Encinitas to incorporate, he was president of his homeowners’ association, he coached his son’s soccer team and was president of San Dieguito High School’s Band Boosters. He enjoyed time spent with his children, whether it was reading a bedtime story, talking at the dinner table, watching a movie, taking a trip to Disneyland, or scouting colleges.
Once retired, Robert and Pamela enjoyed trips to Alaska and Europe and visiting their children and grandchildren. Robert was especially thrilled to see Pompeii as he had a passion for ancient Roman history.
Robert passed away April 9, 2024. He is survived by his wife Pamela, his children Robert Matthew (Megan), Jennifer, Courtney Lorack (Erik), grandchildren Madeleine, Avery, Maximus, August and Finnley, brothers Michael and Stephen, stepbrother James Daniel Hackett and stepsister Maryann Smith.
Donations to Hospice of the North Coast or to St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Encinitas are suggested.
