In Marshalltown, Nick was  member of Elmwood Country Club. In addition to playing golf with a group known as "The Bandits," he played in the regular post-golf card game of "Crazy Pitch," a derivative of Pitch, invented by a retired Fisher exec, Paul Elfers.
The Elmwood version involved complicated bidding and was deemed by a few of  those involved--Jim McGregor, Leroy Rohde, Fisher VP Ben Rector and Nick--to require superior card-playing skills possessed by only a few (not surprisingly, the four mentioned). Others were allowed to play the six-handed game but were subject to scathing criticism if their play was thought to be substandard (including me).
Nick was the least critical and was recognized as one of the best players. Others: Elmwood pro Joe August,  dentist Woody Harvey and a select few others rotated in and out dependent upon the thickness of their skin.
When Nick and Ben left to form their own  Fisher agencies, several new players were allowed to play but it was universally agreed that the skill level of the competition had declined considerably with the departure of the two  Fisher execs.
Nick has now joined the  others at the heavenly table and the game can resume.

Mike and I fished together and sometimes we even catch fish. It’s on these trips that I would hear Mike talk of his dad and he always had fond memories. I especially remember Mike and his dad going through the football games and picking winners and figuring out the over and under.   They talked  about which quarterbacks are playing well and which ones weren’t in the game this weekend which linemen were missing or which wide receiver was doing better or worse.  Mike and his dad would debate all this information and decide which teams to pick. I sensed joy in both of their parts as they went through this ritual.

May you find peace and comfort in knowing your dad experienced this joy.

Mike and Family, may God comfort you all during this time. I remember the many memories that you shared about your Dad, especially the betting on ponies and going to the country club for golf. Am sorry for the loss of your loved one.


His daughter Kelly was our good friend in Bmt and we all loved all the Scallons.  I remember them so well.  Now he is with his beloved  wife again.  They were such a handsome couple.  Beaumont was lucky to have them.  Thank goodness for our oil patch or we never would have known them!  Bless all of you.

I had the pleasure of working for Nick in Beaumont Texas.  I never met a more kind and caring man than Nick.  His door was always open and he always had an encouraging word.   I send my sincere condolences to all the family

I’m very sorry to hear about the passing of Nick. I don’t think there was ever a time when I was over at the Scallon home that he wasn’t smiling, and it was an infectious smile that always made me feel welcome. As I always tell Mike, he made the best grilled burger I think I have ever had. Your Dad will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this difficult time.

Please accept my condolences to the family and friends of Nick. I am ever indebted to Nick for taking a chance and hiring me at Scallon Controls in 1979. As will as a reference for being hired at Fisher Controls in 1990, ending up employed by Emerson until retiring in 2007. In short, Nick hiring me profoundly changed my life and family. For which I am grateful beyond any human measurement.  Nick, might be the kindness gentleman I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. Also a man of the highest integrity on many levels.  We joked at Scallon Controls, whatever Nick touched turned to gold. He trusted his employees, like the time I requested a helicopter pad be constructed on Scallon Controls property. Also, trusting me to sell control valves  and instrumentation offshore with non technology degrees in Marketing and Economics. Nick dosed off in a meeting with Exxon over  luncheon to awaken asking Exxon VP if George Jones worked in the Beaumont office, laughter followed.
