Marion McClellan was born on September 23, 1918 to Nelson and Minnie Barber. She was the youngest of 4 siblings. She was predeceased by her parents, sister Geneva Turnipseed; brother Robert Barber and her husband of 60 years, Carl M McClellan, who passed in January 2011. After retirement, they moved to Orlando, FL and subsequently moved again to Sarasota, FL from West Harford, CT in 1991. They enjoyed a wonderful life in Sarasota until her husband’s health made it necessary for them to move to Westminster Shore in Bradenton, FL in 2003.
Mrs. McClellan was educated in Buffalo, NY schools, where she was raised and then attended Alfred University in N.Y., Howard University, Washington D.C. After graduating from college she started a career with the U.S. Federal Government, serving 35 years and retired in December 1977 from the U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development as a housing official.
After retirement, she joined her husband in real estate at McClellan Realty, Hartford, CT. While in Connecticut, she was active in the community and served on the Board of Directors of Hartford Region YMCA; The Urban League of Greater Hartford; Child of Family Service; and was a charter member of The Farmington Valley Chapter of Links, Inc.
After moving to Florida she was an active member of The First Congressional Church for 16 years and a member of the Women’s Fellowship in Sarasota, a member of Manasota Branch of ASALH; the Bradenton/Sarasota Chapter of Links, Inc. and she and her husband were charter members of Howard Club of Southwest Florida. Since moving to Bradenton, she became a member of The First Presbyterian Church where she is a member of Presbyterian Women; The Bradenton Opera Guild. She and her husband enjoyed living in Westminster Shores where she volunteered as Organist for their Vesper Services for many years.
Her hobbies were music, golf and bridge.
She is survived by her niece Karen Barber; close relatives Sarah Lewis, Marsha Reece, Hillary Turnipseed, Kayla Turnipseed, members of the McClellan family and a host of devoted friends.
