Richard H. Sutton, 95, died peacefully in his sleep on September 26, 2024. Richard, a resident of Palmetto Florida, was a devoted husband of 66 years to his wife Marion, and a loving father to his 6 children, 14 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, and 3 great great-grandchildren.
Richard was predeceased by his wife Marion Sutton, his father Earnest E. Sutton, his mother Florence L. Sutton, and his daughter Pam Goodroe. He is survived by his children Rick (Deborah) Sutton, Greg (Tina) Sutton, Laura Sutton, Lisa (Scott) Fritz, and John (Teri) Sutton, his grandchildren Misty Shavatt, Shelly Kinney, Dawn Morrison, Erin Spivey, Jessica Nantz, Sarah Dunn, Jeorgia Sutton, Kyle Fritz, Chris, Steven, and James Sutton, Chad and Jared Sutton, and Jacob Sutton, his great grandchildren Michael and Mitchell Hall, Breesha Angell, Lexie and Ella White, Emma and Lane Spivey, Lily and Madelyn Sutton, Kiley Nowaczyk, Chloe and Tiana Sutton, Elliott, Timothy, and Charlie Nantz, Dani Varrera, Peyton and Grace Dunn, Samuel and Isaac Sutton, Liam Sutton, and Paisley Horton, his great great-grandchildren Karter and Michael Luke Hall, and MaryJane Hall, and many loving friends and extended families.
Richard was a decorated officer in the United States Air Force. In 1946, Richard enlisted in the Army Air Force shortly after graduation from Palmetto High School at the age of 17and was trained as an aircraft and engine mechanic. During this time, he was stationed in England and in Germany, and participated in the Berlin Airlift.
In 1953, Richard returned to active duty to enter the Aviation Cadets, receive his commission as an officer in the United States Air Force, and complete his training as a Navigator. His duties were carried out flying C-119, C-130, and C-121 aircraft all over the world to make airborne drops for US Army Paratroopers as well as for cargo. His missions included flying expeditions for the Congo Crisis, the Dominican Crisis, and flew 17 highly-classified combat missions in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam war while stationed in Korat Thailand.
During his tenure in the Air Force, Richard received numerous medals, awards, service stars, and commendations for meritorious achievement, including The Air Force Commendation Medal, The Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, The Air Medal, and The Meritorious Service Medal. Richard was a WWII-era veteran, a Korean War veteran, and a Vietnam War veteran but the only hat he wore said USAF Retired.
After he retired from the Air Force, Richard worked for the Manatee County Property Appraiser Office, co-founded Nav-Air Aluminum, and eventually retired from the United States Postal Service.
Richard loved castnetting for mullet, hosting fish fries, gardening, golfing, and tending to his butterflies , but most of all he loved spending time with his friends and family, and attending his grandchildren's and great grandchildren's sports and other activities.
A visitation for Richard will be held Wednesday, October 2, 2024 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Groover Funeral Home at Mansion Memorial Park, 1400 36th Ave East, Ellenton, FL 34222. A funeral service will occur Thursday, October 3, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at First Baptist Church of Gillette, 3301 97th St E, Palmetto, FL 34221.
