He was formerly of Eastham and Dalton, MA. Born on August 13, 1933 in Melrose, MA, John was the son of the late William Mooney, a World War I veteran and firefighter, and the late Julia (Cligott) Mooney. He was predeceased by his brother Bill Mooney and sister Mary (Mooney) Sutherby. John grew up in Malden, MA and graduated from Malden Catholic High School. He then served his country in the National Air Force as a radio mechanic from 1952 -1956 and was awarded medals in recognition for his national defense service and good conduct. After graduating from UMass Amherst (1960) with a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering, John had a successful career at General Electric in Pittsfield, MA where he worked as a logistics systems analyst in the ordnance department for 25 years.
Soon after retiring, he moved to Cape Cod with his wife Tommie and became a licensed realtor for several years before settling in Florida for quieter days, many of which included a game of golf. John’s life was deeply rooted in faith and family. He was a devout Catholic throughout his life, never missing a Sunday Mass, and holding memberships in several parishes throughout his lifetime. His spiritual devotion was evident not only in his church attendance but in the way he lived—with humility, kindness, and unwavering moral character. He shared nearly six decades of marriage with his cherished wife Thomasina (Toole) Mooney, whom he leaves behind. Their union of 59 years was marked by mutual respect and enduring love. He is survived by their son Stephen Mooney and wife Pam, daughter Eileen (Mooney) Poitras and husband David, grandsons Jacob and Joshua Poitras, and several nieces and nephews. John’s role as a father, grandfather, husband, brother, uncle and friend was one he embraced wholeheartedly—always soft-spoken and kind, he led by example and offered steady guidance to those he loved most. John will be remembered as an honest family man who wanted nothing but the best for those around him. His gentle demeanor and quiet strength left a lasting impression on all who had the privilege to know him. A private military memorial service will be held at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, MA.
