On December 23, 2020, Walter Filden Mitchell went home to be with the Lord. He was born in Pennsylvania on June 16, 1941 to Charles Edward and Velva Gladys (Hedrick) Mitchell. He was one of 6 children, along with Willard Mitchell (brother), Helen Wollank (sister), Clarence Mitchell (brother), Laura Rose (sister), and Zack Mitchell (brother). Walter was raised in West Virginia and moved to Baltimore in 1962. He married the love of his life, Betty Ann (Smith), on December 20, 1961 and they just celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary.
Walter and Betty have 7 children, 21 grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren. He enjoyed being with his family more than anything in life. He also enjoyed animals of all kinds, and especially enjoyed his pet cat, Jake. His interests included steam engine trains, fixing things, family gatherings, Disney cruises with family, country cooking, eating crabs, old comedies and western movies, and traditional Christian music and hymns.
Always a hard worker and great provider for his family, Walter worked at Grace Davison – Curtis Bay Works from April 7, 1966 to February 29, 2004, and retired after 38 years. Retirement brought him a lot of joy because he was able to go out to eat with Betty and visit family frequently.
Walter’s first love was God. He was born again by asking Jesus to forgive him of his sins and inviting Him into his heart in 1971, and he humbly served the Lord for 49 years. He and Betty raised their children in church and were an example to them of how to live their lives for God. He faithfully served as an usher in the churches which he and his family attended. Words that he often shared with his family that became some of the last words that he would speak to them were – “I love you. Serve the Lord.”
He is survived by his Children: Gladys (daughter) and Gary Rawlings, Bonnie (daughter) and Samuel Taylor, Kimberly (daughter) and Shawn Gibson, Beverly (daughter) and William Ellis, Walter Jr. (son) and Nuzhat Mitchell, Travis Mitchell (son), and Stephanie (daughter) and Anthony Hurley;
