Of Severna Park on Sunday, May 16, 2010, of complications from injuries suffered in a fall on May 1, 2010.
Born June 10, 1934, in Indianapolis, to the late Russell and Wilma Ward, Kay was the beloved wife for 57 years of Allan C. “Skip” Young, who survives her. Kay, an only child, doted on her own large rambunctious family and is also survived by her 6 children Rick, Lynn, Scott, Jay, Robert, and Chris; their spouses Sheila, Rick Heckman, Debbie, Cheryl, Drenda and Diane; 16 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren (a fifth is due in July).
With a consuming passion for sports, especially for her beloved Orioles, Kay was a recognized fixture in her same Camden Yards lower left-field seat at most home games for many years, once catching a batting practice home run ball in her open purse. She carried this love over to attending, frequently as the official scorekeeper and records manager, the ballgames of her children and grandchildren, who had no more loyal or exuberant fan. Her annual Indy-500 cookout was an event not to be missed, as was her annual Christmas gathering. Kay was famous for seeking out and obtaining the most hard-to-find gifts for the grandkids each year, starting the hunt in January, whether it was Cabbage Patch dolls, Tickle Me Elmo, Xboxes or Beanie Babies. Kay also had a life-long passion for learning, studying Accounting and Business at Anne Arundel Community College and earning her degree Cum Laude, and being inducted into Phi Theta Kappa Society for her academic honors in her 60s.
Family and friends are invited to gather at Gary L. Kaufman Funeral Home at Meadowridge Memorial Park, Inc. 7250 Washington Blvd., Elkridge, Maryland 21075 on Friday, May 21, 2010 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. A sports-themed celebration of Kay’s life, will be celebrated in the Vermillion Chapel at Gary L. Kaufman Funeral Home on Saturday, May 22, 2010 at 2:00 PM, Entombment Private. And, remember…”there’s no crying in baseball.”
