He was born on June 10, 1946 in Seoul, Korea. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Youngja L. Kim and adored twin sons, George J. Kim and Thomas W. Kim. He also left behind his elder brother, Jason Sangwoo Kim, sister-in-law, Bok Sung Kim, sister, Sookhui Peterson, brother in law, Glen Peterson, nieces, Sunny Kim DuBois and Dyane Bronson, and nephew, Alex Peterson.
Henry S. Kim, CPA, graduated from Yonsei University, Seoul, Korea, with a Bachelor’s of Science in Economics, and Syracuse University, USA with a Master’s of Science in Accounting.
He leaves a long respected legacy including being the Chairman of the Koreatown Planning Committee Board, Inc. and helped raise over $700,000 to establish the first Koreatown in Maryland.
Mr. Kim was the Chairman for the Asian Pacific American Affairs Commission under Maryland Governor Larry Hogan. Mr. Kim served as Vice Chairperson for the Asian Pacific American Affairs Commission under the past Maryland Governor Robert Ehrlich. Mr. Kim was the past Chairman of The Korean Society of Maryland. He was also the Chairman of the Korean Business Enterprise Association, Inc. Henry Kim also served as a controller at the Times Crescent Publishing Company, Inc., located in LaPlata, MD and as a controller and business manager for The National Center for Community Actions, Inc. in Washington, DC.
In 1981 he established his own CPA firm which had two offices in Silver Spring and Baltimore, serving business owners and individuals in Maryland, Virginia, Washington DC, New Jersey, New York and nationwide.
In order to implement Governor Hogan’s economic growth policy, Mr. Kim assisted in relocating Washington, DC businesses to Maryland in the amount of 32 million dollars in 2018. This relocation generates tax revenues of 1 million dollars every year to the State of Maryland.
Furthermore, Mr. Kim participated as a delegate in Prince George's County’s China-Korea Trade Mission Trip in 2017. To attract Chinese and Korean companies to the State of Maryland, Mr. Kim negotiated with 6 different companies in China and Korea, including Shandong Taixin Curtain Wall Engineering Co., LTD and real estate companies.
As President of S.T. Kim Company, LLC, he served multi-ethnic groups of clients in diverse industries from retail, manufacturing, professionals and non-profit organizations where he provided accounting, tax preparation, audit representation and business acquisition and management services. In addition, S.T. Kim Company LLC specialized in commercial property acquisitions and property management services in various suburbs of the Baltimore/Washington DC vicinities for the past fifteen years.
Mr. Kim has also donated an immense amount of time to the local community by acquiring non-profit exemption status from the IRS for various community organizations such as Korean American Grocery Organization of Maryland (KAGRO), Korean Businessmen’s League (KBL), Korean School of Baltimore, various Korean churches and Sejong Scholarship Foundation of America, of which he was executive director. He had been a guest speaker of various organizations and conducted a workshop entitled “How to Grow your Business and Personal Wealth and Still Plan for Taxes”.
He wrote and published “Bilingual Guide for Small Businessmen”, was co-founder of the Korean Language Program at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, and had received distinguished honors for his work as a broadcaster in Rockville, Maryland for two years. Henry had also been the senior advisor for the Advisory Council on Democratic Peaceful Unification in Washington (ACDPU) and has received a Presidential award from the Korean Government for his efforts in reunification of South and North Korea.
Henry Kim had received various awards and citations from former Maryland Governor Parris Glendening, Robert Ehrlich, Martin O’Malley and Larry Hogan for Distinguished Public Service. Furthermore, he ended his long distinguished legacy by receiving the 2021 President’s Gold Volunteer Service Award and the 2022 President’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
A Visitation for Henry will be held Saturday, June 4, 2022 from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Gary L. Kaufman Funeral Home at Meadowridge Memorial Park, 7250 Washington Blvd, Elkridge, MD 21075, followed by a Funeral Service at 7:00 PM.
