Gene Smith of Boonesboro, Maryland, age 71, son of the late Edward Smith and the late Luna (Brandon) Smith, passed away on Sunday, March 10, 2024. Gene was born on July 30, 1952, in Washington D.C. He accepted Jesus Christ and was baptized at a young age at Mount Carmel Baptist Church in Washington, D.C.
Gene graduated from District of Columbia Teachers College. He received his Bachelor’s of Science degree in Special Education and pursued his Master’s degree at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. For over 45 years, he dedicated his life to special education, teaching middle school students, starting out in the District of Columbia Public Schools. He ultimately taught at several other middle schools in Montgomery County, the latest school being his beloved Roberto Clemente Middle
School.
A devoted family man, he cherished his roles as a husband, father, and beloved “Pop Pop”. Gene's passion for coaching basketball and baseball was matched only by his enthusiasm for cheering on the Washington Commanders football team and the Wizards basketball team. Beyond sports, Gene found joy in the timeless sound of vinyl records, meticulously collecting “or borrowing” both 45s and 33s. Over the years, he proudly collected various trophies and sports memorabilia, which he showcased in his
basement “man cave”. This was a testament to his unwavering support and pride in his children’s accomplishments.
Gene and his wife Michelle celebrated 45 years of marriage, a love story that began with a chance meeting at a Georgetown University dorm party where he instantly knew she was the one. Their enduring bond was a source of strength and joy throughout their lives together.
Gene's easygoing nature and laid-back demeanor endeared him to all who knew him. He cherished moments spent at the beach, particularly in Rehoboth and Ocean City, and embarked on adventures with his wife to explore their family's genealogy. His genuine care for others was evident in his habit of reaching out to friends and family, ensuring they felt valued and supported. To Gene, family and friends, and the Roberto Clemente Middle School community were everything, and his warm spirit and genuine
kindness will be dearly missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him. Gene leaves to cherish his memory: His loving and dedicated wife Michelle, son Gene T. Smith (Tamika Smith), daughter Brittney G. Sterrette (Jeffrey Sterrette), son Earl Elliot Ervin-Smith, three sisters: Gladys Ann Chisley (David Chisley), Mary Alice Smith, and Bernadine Smith, brothers Paul Edward Smith (deceased), Glenn Smith, grandchildren, great grandchildren, brothers-in-law, a sister-in-law, and a host of other relatives and supportive friends.
Visitation for Gene will be held on Wednesday, March 20, 2024, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, providing an opportunity for friends and loved ones to pay their respects at Gary L. Kaufman Funeral Home at Meadowridge Memorial Park, 7250 Washington Blvd., Elkridge, MD 21075. The family will gather for a Private Funeral Service and Burial to honor and remember Gene's life, as they find solace in their cherished memories together.
