Elida Maynez Sarmiento

Elida Maynez Sarmiento entered this world on November 25, 1948, in the town of Villa Ocampo, Durango, Mexico, born to Jesús and Cira Maynez. On April 12, 2025, she stepped peacefully into eternity, into the arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, whom she loved so dearly. Her life—graceful, vibrant, and full of meaning—is one worth celebrating, cherishing, and remembering.

She was the fifth of ten children, raised amidst the warmth and faith of a Christian home in Delicias and Juarez, Chihuahua. There, as a young girl, she was taught to love the Lord and walk closely with Him—a foundation that would guide her every step. Even in childhood, Elida’s mind shone brightly. She was known for her sharp intellect, and in the sixth grade, she proudly placed second in a math competition—a contest broadcast over local radio, marking her early brilliance.

At the tender age of fourteen, Elida made the most important decision of her life: she publicly declared her faith in Jesus and was baptized in water, forever sealing her heart to His. Elida and her sisters sang in church and were known for their beautiful harmonies, their songs stirring the hearts of all who listened. She served her church faithfully, giving her time and gifts as a youth group secretary in the 1970s. With care and diligence, she typed and compiled a songbook for the youth choir—each page a labor of love.

On April 29, 1973, Elida married Juan Daniel Sarmiento in a double wedding ceremony shared with her sister Emma and Emma’s husband, Abel Cordova, as both couples were joined in holy matrimony.

Not long after, Elida and Juan Daniel moved to Denver, Colorado, where they planted roots and built a life marked by family and unwavering faith. They were blessed with two children—Elida and Juan Daniel Jr. (Elida had many gifts... but naming children wasn’t necessarily one of them). Elida passed on her faith not through instruction alone, but by example: reading her Bible each morning, praying, and then singing hymns throughout the house as the day unfolded.

Throughout her life, Elida was never shy about sharing her faith in Christ with others gently guiding several friends and co-workers to the light of His saving grace.

Elida was small in stature but had a big personality and was often found being the life of the party. She was sharp-witted and endlessly entertaining, with impeccable impressions and stories that could fill a room with laughter. Her love was tangible—most often expressed through food lovingly prepared and generously shared. She was fiercely determined, with a tireless work ethic that inspired her children to pursue excellence in all they did.

She never lost her hunger to learn. A lifelong student, she devoured books in both Spanish and English, letting stories and ideas nourish her soul. She found joy in life’s simple pleasures—long walks along the trails behind her home that led to Lake Elkridge, the rustle of birds in the trees, and the gentle presence of deer, to whom she’d offer apples as a neighborly gesture of kindness.

Elida lived passionately and loved deeply. Above all, she treasured her family. She was especially devoted to her children and grandchildren, of whom she was immeasurably proud. Her legacy lives on in them—in their faith, their laughter, their tenacity, and their love and devotion to Jesus.

She is survived by her husband, Juan Daniel Sr., her daughter Elida, her son Daniel, his wife Neomi, and their two children, her beloved grandchildren - Emma and Elam Sarmiento.

Elida’s life was a song—sung with grace, conviction, and joy—and though her earthly melody has come to a close, its echoes will remain forever in the hearts of those who loved her.

Junto con sus hermanas, cantaba en la iglesia y eran conocidas por sus hermosas armonías, interpretaciones que conmovían el alma de quienes las escuchaban. Sirvió con fidelidad a su iglesia, ofreciendo su tiempo y dones como secretaria del grupo de jóvenes en los años 70. Con dedicación y esmero, mecanografió y compiló un himnario para el coro juvenil—cada página una labor de amor.

El 29 de abril de 1973, Elida unió su vida con la de Juan Daniel Sarmiento en una ceremonia de boda doble, compartida con su hermana Emma y su esposo, Abel Córdova, en la que ambas parejas fueron unidas en sagrado matrimonio.

Era tenaz y tenía una ética de trabajo incansable que inspiró a sus hijos a perseguir la excelencia en todo lo que hacían.

Nunca perdió su sed de aprender. Fue una estudiante de por vida, devorando libros tanto en español como en inglés, dejando que las historias y las ideas nutrieran su alma. Encontraba gozo en los placeres sencillos de la vida—largas caminatas por los caminos detrás de su casa que llevaban a Lake Elkridge, el susurro de las aves en los árboles y la presencia apacible de los venados, a quienes ofrecía manzanas como un gesto amistoso y lleno de ternura.
