Vern was born on January 9, 1936 in Bates, the son of Delmer and Lucy (Baynton) Buck. He graduated from Traverse City High in 1955 and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1955.
On July 15, 1961, Vern was wed to Sharon Libbers in Elk Rapids. Vern and Sharon raised four sons while living on a farm in Kewadin. Vern worked at Stromberg-Carlson for nearly 40 years in manufacturing and truck driving.
He loved living on the farm and provided a wonderful environment for raising his family. After retirement, Vern and Sharon enjoyed spending time together camping and traveling. Vern had a great sense of humor, lived his life to the fullest, was a dedicated and loving husband, and a devoted father and grandfather.
Vern is survived by his sons, Mark (Susan) Buck, Dave (Mary) Buck, Dan (Kate) Buck, and Jim Buck; grandchildren, Daniel Swenson, Kimberly Hardin, Scott Buck, Melanie Buck, Charles Hammerich, Trevor Buck, Alyssa Buck, and Morgan Buck; eight great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and good friends, Kristina Hendrickson, Nancy Washburn, Glenn Neuman, and Lou and Al Hubbell.
Vern was preceded in death by his wife Sharon, his parents Delmer and Lucy Buck, and his siblings.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 30, at 11 a.m., at Feast of Victory Lutheran Church in Acme, with the Rev. Matt Deams presiding. Visitation will be held Tuesday, Sept. 29, from 6 to 8 p.m., at Covell Funeral Home in Elk Rapids as well as one hour prior to the funeral on Wednesday at the church. A graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Maple Grove Cemetery in Elk Rapids.
