Carl William Peterson, age 82 of Elk Rapids, passed into the loving care of GOD, Sept. 19, 2020 at Munson Medical Center. Carl was born Jan. 21, 1938 in Worcester, Massachusetts to Carl and Arlene (Clark) Peterson.
Carl grew up on the east coast, and enjoyed wonderful adventures with his family, including entertaining a future queen while playing the piano. He also enlisted in the United States Navy and was a proud veteran. On September 1, 1957 in Mio, MI. he married his beloved wife, Connie (Birdsall). Carl worked for General Motors while living in Ithaca, MI., before moving to Elk Rapids in 1968 and making it their home. Once established in Elk Rapids, he took up carpentry, and was a much sought after tradesman for his cabinetry and home building all throughout northern Michigan.
Carl had a deep respect for nature, and enjoyed cutting and splitting firewood, walking his dogs, bird watching, and fishing behind the dam in Elk Rapids. He was a familiar face in the community, and many sought out his knowledge regarding his fishing expertise. He especially enjoyed spending time at his cabin the Upper Peninsula just soaking up nature, exploring, and spending time with his family.
Carl had a very welcoming personality and was a well respected and noble character, always ready to give a helping hand. There are not enough words to express the good this man set out to do. He loved helping others and could be found almost anywhere in town helping people. His way was to welcome you and he made friends easily. He will be missed by everyone. His grandchildren were especially dear to his heart, and he enjoyed teaching them and tell them stories.
Besides his wife Connie, he is survived by his children Kenneth (Linda), Michael (Pat), Christopher (Debra), and daughter Lynda Peterson. Also surviving are 13 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by both parents and brother Donald.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, September 27th at 1:00 p.m. and the harbor pavilion in Elk Rapids.
