Irene was born March 17, 1927 in Rineyville, KY. She was the daughter of Henry and Lona McCoy Daugherty. She was a past member of Pleasant View Methodist Church, but presently a member of College Heights Church. Irene was primarily a housewife, mother, and grandmother. She was homeschooled by her mother, and was proud of the fact that she was able to attend her senior year, at the same level as her peers and graduate from Howevalley School. It was at Howevalley School that she met her first husband, Joe. Irene was a lady of faith and demonstrated this daily in her life. Her past work history included selling Avon and Raleigh products, cleaning for Swope Motors, mail carrying at Rineyville Post Office, house parenting at Glendale Children's Home, and was a seamstress at Elizabethtown Laundry. She was the owner of Thimble Sewing Center. Irene enjoyed her grandchildren, gardening, quilting, sewing, crocheting, playing the piano and being a member of the choir at College Heights Church. Irene and Floyd enjoyed spending most of their time fishing at Nolin River, Dale Hollow Lake. Irene was active in community services her entire life, especially those involving the Cecilia community. Irene was a lifetime member of the General Grand Chapter Order of the Eastern Star. Irene served several years as secretary of the Cecilia Ruritan Organization. One of her biggest pleasures was writing the Cecilia News for the News Enterprise. Since the death of her husband Floyd, the last two years were increasingly difficult for Irene but due to the loving care provided by her son and daughter in law, Irene was able to remain at home.
Irene was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband of 29 years, Joseph Barnes, the father of her children; her second husband of 30 years, Floyd Dodson; and one son, James Barnes.
Survivors include her son, Wayne and Marcia; grandchildren, Brock (Ashley) and Emily (Tara); three great-grandchildren, Brody, Blake, and Ellis; and several step-children and step-grandchildren.
The funeral is Wednesday at 5 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home in Elizabethtown with Rev. Don Cox officiating.
Visitation begins at 1 p.m. Wednesday and continues until the time of the service.
In lieu of flowers please donate to the Alzheimer's Association or the College Heights Church.
