Yolanda was born on April 10, 1939 in El Paso, TX to Raul and Consuelo Orona. She was a graduate of Jefferson High School where she was the first ever female drum majorette. Yolanda went on to earn her Bachelor’s Degree from Park University, her Master’s Degree from Webster University and eventually her Doctorate from Berkeley University.
Yolanda dedicated her career to teaching, inspiring countless students with her passion for learning and her unwavering kindness. She retired after many years of service, but continued her passion for teaching and inspiring others by leading Bible study groups at her local church.
Yolanda was a devoted wife to her husband of 28 years, Phillip, and a loving mother to her daughter, Denise. She was known for her vibrant personality, her loving heart, and a smile that would light up a room. She was a devoted member of St. Raphael Catholic Church where she served as a Eucharistic Minister.
Yolanda was preceded in death by her mother, Consuelo G. Orona and her sister Nena O. Leos. She is survived by her husband Phillip “Phil” Sims, Ph.D., her daughter Denise Raab (James), her sister Irma Hurdis, her grandchildren Christopher, Sabrina, and Celeste, several nieces and nephews and many dear friends.
A Rosary Service will be held on April 21, 2025, at 7:00 PM at Martin Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass will be held on April 22, 2025, at St. Raphael Catholic Church at 9:00 AM, officiated by Allan Alaka.
Yolanda's life was a testament to the power of kindness, compassion, and a love for learning. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
