Rev. Msgr. William Hugh Ryan born on December 21, 1922 in Creighton, Nebraska was called home to our Lord on September 26, 2014. He was the son of the late Joseph Patrick Ryan and Mary Virginia Watteyne. He was educated at St. Ludger's Academy, Creighton, Nebraska, St. John Minor Seminary, San Antonio, Texas and St. Thomas Seminary, Denver, Colorado. He was ordained Deacon in April, 1948 and Priest on May 27, 1948 by Bishop Hunkeler, in Grand Island, Nebraska. He was named Monsignor in the spring of 1975 by Bishop Sidney M. Metzger. Msgr. Ryan served as Associate Pastor at Our Lady of the Valley Parish, June 1948 - May 1951; at St. Joseph Parish, June 1951 - June 1953; Served as Pastor at: Immaculate Heart of Mary, Las Cruces, NM July 1953 - June 1960; St. Genevieve and Holy Cross Parishes, Las Cruces, NM, July 1960 to May 1971; St. Matthew Parish, El Paso, Texas, April 1971 - August 1983; Our Lady of Peace Parish, Alpine, TX, September 1983 to August 1988; Immaculate Conception Parish, September 1988 until his retirement on August 27, 2006. Msgr. Ryan also served as Director of the Newman Club at NMSU in 1953; Member and Chairman of the Liturgical Commission for the Diocese of El Paso; Vicar for the St. Thomas Vicariate and St. Peter Vicariate and was a member of the Presbyteral Council; he was one of the founding leaders of the El Paso Interreligious Sponsoring Organization. Msgr. Ryan is survived by his sister Patricia Luby, Omaha, Nebraska and his brother Jim Ryan, California. Visitation will be Monday, September 29, 2014 from 6 p.m.to 9 p.m. at St. Patrick Cathedral, 1118 N. Mesa Street, with Vigil Service at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, September 30, 2014 at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick Cathedral, 1118 N. Mesa Street, with Most Rev. Mark J. Seitz as main celebrant. Interment will follow at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Cemetery.
