On Wednesday, September 3, 2014 William Odell Maxwell peacefully passed from this life into the next surrounded by all five of his loving daughters – his girls. William Odell Maxwell was born in Anna, Texas, March 2, 1921 to William Thomas Maxwell and Lydia Ellen Stroud. His early years were marked by hard work in a farming family during the Depression. Those years and experiences developed his strength of character and his quiet determination (and his stubbornness!) which would carry him through the events of World War II. He enlisted for service January 10, 1940 – he was 19 years old. His first duties were training horses as part of the 2nd Brigade stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas. He became an expert gunner in the 62nd Field Artillery Battalion. He earned 7 Bronze Stars in the following World War II campaigns: Tunisia, Sicily, Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Central Europe and Ardennes. He earned a Bronze Indian Arrowhead for being part of the amphibious assault at Normandy. He earned a Good Conduct Medal and the American Defense Service Medal. He had the opportunities to meet General Patton, General Marshall, and Winston Churchill. His stories were many and remarkable. He remained committed to the needs of disabled veterans and supported the cause his entire life. He married Angela Rosales in January 1946; she preceded him in death in 1970. Together, they had five daughters: Gloria Maxwell Rose, Carol Maxwell Moreno, Barbara Maxwell, Angela Maxwell Brown and Elizabeth Maxwell Malfaro. All total, he has 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He remarried Genny Baeza and was a faithful and loving husband. Many thanks to the staff at Del Sol Medical Center for their competent and dedicated care, to Dr. Jerry Miller, his cardiologist of 33+ years, Dr. Syed Yusoof, his internal medicine physician, everyone at DaVita East Dialysis Center and El Paso Kidney Associates, and the loving services provided by Caring Senior Service of El Paso. Visitation will be held from 3 – 6 pm Sunday, September 7, 2014 at Hillcrest Funeral Home-Carolina with a Funeral Service at 4 pm. Interment will follow at 1 pm Monday, September 8, 2014 at Fort Bliss National Cemetery. Friends and family are welcome to celebrate the life of such a heroic and kind man. Services under the direction of HILLCREST FUNERAL HOME-CAROLINA, 1060 Carolina, 598-3332.
