Sandra A. Varela passed away Thursday, September 15, 2016. “Sandy,” as she was known to family and friends, was born in Fabens, TX and was a lifelong educator for the Catholic Schools of the Diocese of El Paso, most recently at Our Lady of Assumption School. She was preceded in death by her husband, Tomas Varela; her parents, Primitivo and Maria Del Refugio Contreras; and her brothers, Primitivo (Primo) and Robert (Bobby) Contreras. She is survived by her children, David Varela, Leticia (Tisha) Delgado, Steven Varela, and Celina Varela; daughters-in-law, Monica and DeAnna Varela; her grandchildren, Christopher Delgado, Patrick Delgado, Georgia Varela, Alison Varela, Jacob Varela, Aidan Banuelos, and Nikolas (Nikki) Varela; sisters, Billie Dunn, Marta Contreras, Judy Rey, Terri Ramos, and Rosemary Carmona; brothers, Miguel and Tommy Contreras, and many other relatives and friends. Our mom was simply pure sunshine, pure joy, and pure love. Her home was a place where kids could be kids, where marathon domino games could be played, and where the most incredible tortillas were made. She was an avid reader, a dedicated educator, and (forgivably) a 49ers fan. She was our biggest advocate, loudest supporter, and unconditional caregiver. Mom had a contagious laugh, and was always willing to share it-- all encompassed by a sense of humility and compassion. We would like to extend our deepest appreciation to mom’s caregivers, and her doctors and nurses, who quickly became part of our family too. And to our family and friends who do what they always do—rally around with their love and support. Visitation and Eulogy will be held on Tuesday, September 20, 6:00-9:00pm; Vigil Service to begin at 7:00pm at the Hillcrest Funeral Home, 1060 N. Carolina Drive, El Paso, TX, 79915, 915.598.3332. *Please note that the family is asking that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the school that our mom worked at and cherished: Our Lady of Assumption School, Attention: Mr. Vass, 4805 Byron Street – El Paso, Texas 79930, 915.565.3411. Funeral Mass will be held Wednesday, September 21, 12:00pm at St. Joseph's Church, 1315 Travis St, El Paso, TX 79903, 915.566.9396.
