He was a third generation El Pasoan completing the family's 100 year history in El Paso's business community. He attended Hillside Elementary, Ross Middle School, and his freshman through sophomore years at Burges High School. In 1968 he graduated from De Anza High School in El Sobrante, California, and in 1972 was awarded a BA in economics, cum laude, by the University of San Francisco. He joined the family businesses soon after graduation. He was the long-time CEO of Western Recycling, Inc., formerly Casuco, Inc., and served as Vice President of Caballero Realty, Inc., the former operator of the Caballero Motor Hotel. He was also president of San Juanito Land and Cattle Company farming in the Mesilla Valley and producing a variety of chili products distributed in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California under the Rio Grande and San Juanito labels.
He will be missed by his wife of 37 years, Priscilla Ann Rodriguez Caballero, who shared his love of animals, especially their Boston Terriers, Spanky, Winston, Jinx, and Sophie. Richard greatly enjoyed spending time with his cousins and their children who saw him as a mentor and often sought out his business knowledge and his advice. Richard was an avid hunter and gun collector, loved driving his Porsches, spending time in his Cloudcroft home, and listening to the music of bands that he saw in concert while living in San Francisco, California. Richard was preceded in death by his father, Manuel H. Caballero, sister Magdalena "Bambi" Sjoquist (John), aunts Helen Jaime Canchola, Elena and Guadalupe Caballero, business partner and mentor, and uncles Romualdo Ray Caballero and Jose A. Caballero, as well as his cousins Chris Madrid of San Antonio and his sidekick and partner in crime, Tony Caballero.
He is survived by his adoring wife, Priscilla, mother Grace Jaime Caballero, brother Manuel H. Caballero, Jr., and sisters Mary Alice Lyerly (Dexter) and Eugenia Espindola (Carl) of Las Vegas, Nevada. He is also survived by his father and mother-in-law Jesus and Norma Rodriguez, brother-in-law Brian Ruy Rodriguez, sister-in-law Pamela Leigh Sawyer (Kevin), niece Victoria Ann Arias, aunt Beatrice Madrid of San Antonio, and many cousins, including Sal Canchola, Pat Caballero Diaz, Laura Caballero, Jose A. Caballero, Jr., Gabriel Canchola, Joe Castillo, Paul Castillo, Terry Sharp, Raymond C. and Margarita Caballero of Portland, Oregon, Marcos Canchola of Austin, Texas, and Carlos and Diane Madrid of San Antonio.
A Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 23, 2013 at 6:00 PM with Rosary to follow at
7:00 PM at Martin Funeral Home West. Mass of the Resurrection officiated by Monsignor David Fierro, will be held on Friday, May 24, 2013 at 1:00 PM at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, 1551 Belvidere. Interment will follow at Mt. Carmel Cemetery. A Celebration of Richard's life will begin at 4:00 PM at D'Lox Restaurant, 630 Sunland Park Dr.

Honorary pall bearers will be Brian R. Rodriguez, Sal Canchola, Karl Schneider and Paul Castillo.
The family is very grateful for the kind and compassionate care given Richard by physicians Victor A. Diaz, Humberto Serna, Emilio Gonzalez-Ayala, Suresh Antony, and Adolfo Anchondo, MDs and by the caring staff of Hospice El Paso.
