Ramon Alarcon, beloved husband, father, and grandfather went to be with the Lord on May 29, 2016 at the age of 85. He was one of 10 children born to Julian and Aurora Alarcon in San Elizario, Texas. When he was 10 years old, his father died leaving his mother and older brothers to raise the younger children. He served our country in the U.S. Army and fought in the Korean War where he was wounded by an enemy landmine, earning him a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. After his military service and with the encouragement of his oldest brother, he studied and received an Associate’s Degree in Accounting. He soon discovered his interest in, and studied, automotive mechanics, which led to a career with the civil service maintaining and repairing military equipment, vehicles, and tanks until his retirement. In California, he met and married Carmen Haro, and they were married 56 years until his death. They had three daughters, Velma, Irene, and Yvonne who he raised to be strong, independent, and educated women. He taught them about the importance of discipline, hard work, and a college education and pushed them to do things not typical for girls, such as ride motorcycles, drive boats and all-terrain vehicles, waterski, mow the lawn, and help him fix cars. His grandchildren were the joy of his life and kept him young. He loved camping, boating, and riding motorcycles, which he shared with his daughters and grandchildren who adored him. Ramon was a man of integrity who lived a full life and helped many people along the way. He was the rock of his family with his true and constant love.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Julian and Aurora Alarcon; brothers Rodolfo, Julian, Paulo, and sisters Josefina, Refugio, and Teodora. He is survived by his wife, Carmen; daughters Velma (Jesus) Gandara, Irene (Raul) Rios, Yvonne (Jeffrey) Curtis; step-children Rigoberto (Maricela) Gutierrez, Irma Ortega, and Carmen Gutierrez; grandchildren Enrique Velez, Cynthia Velez, Ivy Monge, Sharon Wells Covey, Ashley Wells, Matthew Reyes, Alexandria Rios, Christina Rios, Jordan Reyes, Nicholas Reyes, Tristan Gutierrez, Christian Curtis, Sophia Rios, Benjamin Rios, and Mayra Flores; 10 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren; brothers Guillermo and Jose Antonio Alarcon and sister, Delfina Enriquez; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Our family has suffered a great loss, but we rejoice in our faith that you are in heaven with our Lord and Savior. Until we meet again, the memories of you will sustain us. We love you, and you will forever be in our hearts.
