February 1, 1936 - May 16, 2018
Phyllis Montgomery was born February 1, 1936 in Long Beach, California. She moved to El Paso in 1944 and graduated from Austin High School in 1954. Though she had the ability to pursue and succeed in any career, she chose to be a homemaker after marrying Glenn Montgomery in 1956.
Phyllis’ career choice not only benefited her family but also her neighbors, church, schools, Cub Scouts, and community. Children loved Phyllis as a second mom and came to her for advice, while elderly neighbors thought of her as a daughter with her home cooked meals and companionship.
Grandchildren were Phyllis’ pride and joy. She also loved sewing, flower arranging, and jogging. Caring for her immaculate yard, including pulling weeds, brought her great pleasure. Phyllis was well known for her Christmas tree which was filled with handmade and sentimental ornaments. It was displayed until her birthday each year, but eventually she chose to keep it up the entire year. Phyllis is described as compassionate, faithful, strong-willed, and independent. She formed lifelong connections with people and went out of her way to make them feel loved. Her kindness and generosity have impacted countless lives.
Phyllis is preceded in death by her parents Ernest and Eva Bauer, and brother Gail Bauer. She is survived by her husband of almost 62 years, Glenn, as well as her children Mike, Steve, Debbie (Ray), and Ron (Angie). Six grandchildren and one great grandson.
The family thanks Caring Companions and Encompass Health for their care and compassion. Eric, Jasmine, and Zach, your presence helped ease the transition as she became less independent. Erica, Mrs. Montgomery readily followed your advice which made you unique in that regard.
