One of Dad’s greatest accomplishments and proudest moments was serving in the U.S. Army. He was so proud to serve his country and loved sharing stories of his life during that time. Dad, we thank you for your service. Throughout his life, Dad enjoyed doing many things that turned into family traditions. His love for baseball was one of them which was carried on with his sons and grandsons who played both baseball and softball. Dad was known throughout the city as an amazing ball player. To his final day, he proudly displayed pictures and trophies that represented his accomplishments as a successful baseball player. What has become a special and meaningful tradition, was an annual hunting trip that started with him and his sons and was later extended to include his grandsons and granddaughter. When this season ended, you were sure to find Dad playing golf at Ascarate or bowling on Thursday nights. He also instilled in all of us his love for camping and fishing, all of which the family continues to do today. As you can see, Dad loved the outdoors, he loved the light God would grace us with each day. During his final days, he asked for his window to be open so he could see and feel God’s light shine upon him in his room.
Dad was so proud to have worked and retired from Raytheon Service after 25 years of service. During this time he shared with his family many company holiday parties and summer cookouts at Wet N Wild.
We thank you, Lord, for calling our father during the Lenten season, a beautiful season in which we were taught to mourn and reflect but also taught to focus on hope and look forward to a new life, our father’s new life in heaven. Though painful, our loss is a gain as we now have a new angel to guide and protect us here on earth. Our sorrow will be transformed into joy as his pain and suffering is washed away as he prepares to meet our mother in heaven to begin a new life together. And from his death, we will focus on the life to come where his memory will live on forever.
Visitation for Oscar Ortega will be on Tuesday, March 19 at Martin Funeral Home East on George Dieter from 5:00pm to 9:00pm with a rosary at 6pm. Funeral mass will be on Wednesday, March 20 at St. Francis Xavier Church on Latta at 9:30am with his final resting place at Ft. Bliss Cemetery.
