Tony was born on Dec. 26, 1948 to Leopoldo and Isela Gutierrez, who preceded him in death. He attended the neighborhood schools, Clardy Elementary, Henderson Middle and Jefferson High School before enlisting in the U.S. Navy where he served for two years with a tour in Vietnam.
Anywhere Tony went, he could easily become the life of the party, befriending anyone he encountered. One fateful night, he met Mary, whom he would spend the rest of his life with. They married and started a family, raising three determined daughters, Rachel, Marta and Christina. Raising girls to become women may not have come naturally to Tony, but he tried his best and as a result taught them how to be fierce, independent and resourceful.
What did come as natural as breathing was being a charming and loving grandfather to Michael, John, Ava, Jackie, Angelina and Leo. Their laughter and love brought him immeasurable joy, and he treasured every moment spent with them. From picking them up from school, sharing stories and making them laugh to providing sugary snacks, finding them the perfect toy and jamming out to Katy Perry, Tony loved being a grandfather.
The bond of family was of utmost importance to him, and he was blessed to also be survived by his brother Leo and sisters, Rita and Virginia, who were by his side throughout his journey. Their unwavering support and love provided him with strength and comfort during both joyful and challenging times.
Over the course of his life, Tony had many jobs, skills and adventures which yielded friendships, stories and, of course, good times. As a result, he was able to fix anything that needed repair or find a replacement through some expert trading at the swap meet. Needed a house to be move-in ready within days? He was there to help. Car tire fell apart? He got you a new one by trading in some gloves. No matter what, Tony helped the ones he loved the most.
Everyone’s relationship with Tony was different, but that only made the bond you had with him unique and special. More than likely, he would offer you a soda, pull up a chair for you and strike up a conversation. We will miss his laughter and gumption every day. And we can only hope to carry on his legacy and be as helpful to others as he was to us.
