He lived a life filled with family love and warm friendships, had a wonderful sense of humor enjoyed by all, and enriched our lives with his presence. He grew up in Fabens, TX, where he was known as “Sonny” and attended Fabens High School. He was an all-around athlete, and graduated in 1949 as President of his senior class. He continued his education at the University of Notre Dame. Matthew enlisted in the United States Navy and served his country from 1951 to 1955 during part of the Korean War. He spent time aboard the USS Frontier, and was a member of the U.S. Navy boxing team. He went on to marry Helen Elean Sommer, his true love, in 1955 and raise a family of five children. After a 35-year career with the U.S. Federal Civil Service, he retired.
Matthew was preceded in death by his parents, Matthew and Natcha Clune; his beloved wife of 53 years, Helen Elean Clune; and his daughter, Dorothy K. Sobey.
