Mary's memorial service will be held on January 22nd, 2022 at 11:00 AM at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints located at 5510 Hondo Pass Dr. El Paso, TX 79924. Mary Jo Hughes was born September 27, 1943, in Iowa City, Iowa, the daughter of Perry and Dorothy (Baker) Hughes.
She was one of 7 children and enjoyed her childhood in Iowa City. She graduated from Iowa City High in 1961 and was proud that her graduation year read the same right side up as it did upside down.
Mary was a graduate of the University of Iowa, and taught middle school science for several years. Mary worked for Taco Bell as a manager and then moved on to management at Target, where she later retired. She loved food service and cooking, and she enjoyed all the different people she met while in these careers.
Mary's favorite pastimes were reading, cooking, and watching cooking shows and history shows, and teaching primary children at her church. She loved golfing and singing campfire songs and enjoyed playing board games. She loved to laugh and joke and especially loved children and hymns.
Mary loved her grandchildren and she loved her dogs. She is preceded in death by her favorite dog Nick, who she thought of as her first child, and her sweet dog Ginger, who was found by her son Marcus and named by her daughter Catherine.
Mary's family includes her children: Catherine (Mike) Tabor, Christine Zimmerly, Matthew Voss, and Marcus (Vanessa) Voss; grandchildren: Simone Cady Voss, Cyan Bass, Christianna Zimmerly, Nathan Tabor, Milo Voss, Christopher Zimmerly, Marlee Voss, Christian Johnson, Brandon Johnson, Ian Johnson, Auryn Voss, Jonathan Georges, and Levi Johnson; siblings: Barb Richards, John (Stacey) Hughes, Terri Miller and Bill Hughes. She was preceded in death by her sister Dayle, her brother in law Bill; her infant sister, Susan Hughes; and her parents, Perry and Dorothy. In lieu of flowers memorial condolences in Mary's honor should be in donations to the El Paso Insights Science Museum or to the Child Crisis Center of El Paso.
