Mary Alice was born at Hotel Dieu Hospital in El Paso, Texas on Aug. 2, 1931. As the oldest of three children, she spent her summers at her parents’ cattle ranch, Tapiecitas, near Nuevo Casas Grandes, Mexico, located about 120 miles south of Columbus, New Mexico. There she learned to ride horses and help her mom and dad with typical ranching chores. The school year was spent at her grandmother’s home in Sunset Heights in El Paso where she attended St. Patrick’s Elementary School and later Loretta High School from which she graduated in 1950.
A lifelong devout Catholic, she would faithfully attend Mass given by a local priest at the Sacred Heart chapel her mother had constructed near the main ranch house in Mexico. In El Paso, she attended Holy Family Catholic Parish in Sunset Heights, and later in life she attended St. Matthew’s Catholic Parish in El Paso’s upper valley.
Having grown up without a TV set, she remained an avid reader throughout her life. She was most fond of reading History books, especially U.S. History and Scottish history as she traced her lineage on her mother’s side to the McDow Clan in Scotland.
Aside from reading, she loved to travel when the opportunity arose, having traveled throughout Mexico and much of the U.S. She also was able to take an amazing cruise through the Panama Canal in 2007.
Among her favorite trips were the three she made to Scotland where she reveled in its history, beauty and charm as well as its people.
Aside from her passion for history and travel and along with her devotion to her Catholic faith, her family was by far her most important and beloved component of her amazing life.
She is preceded in death by her parent’s George Martin Lewis Jeffers of Weed, New Mexico, and her mother Alicia McDow Jeffers of Villa Ahumada, Chihuahua, her first husband Daniel Farias of El Paso and her last husband George Hirsch of El Paso.
She is survived by her sister Neni Beall, brother Jaime Jeffers, her six children. Sons Jaime Farias (spouse Laura) of El Paso, Eduardo Farias (spouse Pier) of El Paso, George “Colorado” Hirsch of Safford, Ariz., and daughters, Judi Moallem (spouse Abbas) of Anaheim Hills California, Elaine Carrasco (spouse Daniel) of La Habra, California and Kathie Hupfer (spouse John) of El Paso.
In addition to her children, she is survived by 17 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Enhabit Hospice for their tender and loving care.
A Memorial Mass is scheduled for 10:30 am, Friday June 7, 2024 at St. Matthew Church 400 West Sunset Road El Paso, TX
