Martha Rey Chavez, 82, passed away peacefully on February 19, 2019. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, George I. Chavez, her 3 children, Leticia Alvarado (Henry), Cristina Chavez, and Jorge Luis Chavez (Dan), 6 grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren.
Martha was a dedicated Language Arts and Speech teacher at Ross Middle School for 30 years. During her career, she trained young orators and encouraged the most timid to express themselves in Prose, Poetry, Debate and Public Speaking. She helped coordinate the regional UIL Speech Contests and monthly Speech Tournaments throughout El Paso.
During her career she was named Ross Teacher of the Year. Additionally she was a member and past president of the American Association of University Women, as well as a member and past president of the El Paso Speech Teachers Association. After retiring she continued as a substitute teacher at EPISD for 10 more years.
Martha believed in positivity and always saw the silver lining behind every cloud, no matter the situation. Her faith was her strength, and her family constantly called on her for prayers and “velitas”. She will be truly missed by all who knew her and loved her. Visitation will be from 4:00PM- 6:00PM on Sunday, March 3, 2019 with a Rosary beginning at 6:00 PM at Martin Funeral Home Central, 3839 Montana Ave. Funeral mass will be at Our Lady of Assumption at 9:45am, 4800 Byron. Internment will be at Fort Bliss National Cemetery on Monday, March 4, 2019 at 11:00am. Services entrusted to Del Angel Martin Central Funeral Home.
