We met Mario, over 3 years ago, at the Aikido dojo in El Paso. He was our instructor and a great friend. He was very much loved and admired by all and will be greatly missed.

I first met Mario at the Aikido dojo in El Paso. His dad was still around and I thought it was great that they shared this bond. Over the years, Mario was always there to greet me. “How it going Ham?” I felt that when he asked that question he sincerely wanted to know. He listened to whatever I had to say.  I enjoyed doing pair work with him because he was one of the few people that I couldn’t just overpower.  I had to have solid technique to unbalance him.  I always felt that he was one of those few people who epitomizes the Aikido spirit both inside and outside the dojo.  He will be missed. 

Mario was my children's Aikido Instructor but he was much more than an instructor. My son Jacob would show Mario his awards or a new gadget he got. He always wanted to share things with "Mr. Mario." Mario was an excellent roll model and mentor to my son and today he's a better person because Mario was in his life.
 My daughter also was Mario's student. Once again he was more than an instructor. She loves mythology, history and current events.  Countless times I would see them laughing at the Dogo over some joke they shared about current events, politics or mythology.
When he started teaching my children my son was about 8 and my daughter about 10 years old. He had so much patience with them I called him "Saint Mario. " He always had an encouraging word and a beautiful smile. We will miss him but feel Blessed that he was a part of our lives for the past few years. We are better because we got to know him. 
To his family our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time if loss.

Mario was someone you thought you might want to recruit for a football team or a bouncer, but then you realized he was just a big teddy bear with the most gentle heart.  He never forgot birthdays or special occasions and often ended his texts with words of love for his big sis. It amused me to see this big man being so gentle with Mom’s little Ninja terror dog.

While I would relax with a People magazine, Mario would read a journal on foreign currency or blow me away with some insight on political issues in a country I couldn’t find in a map.  He had a lot of horsepower in that brain of his
