It is with heavy hearts that we gather to remember Maria Elena Hernandez, lovingly known as Nena. Born on May 18, 1934, in Gomez Palacio, Durango, Nena left us peacefully at home, surrounded by her loved ones. She was preceded in death by her loving parents, Manuel Ismael Davila and Carolina Davila, and her beloved husband, Alfonso Hernandez. Nena’s spirit lives on in her siblings: Consuelo Pina, Manuel Davila, Rosario Richardson, Irene Davila, Armando Davila, Mario Davila, Ramon Torres, and Hilda Davila.
Nena had a profound love for children, finding her greatest joy in their presence, enjoying their laughter and playfulness. Though she never had children of her own, she often said she was blessed by God through the many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews she embraced and nurtured as her own. She cherished the time she spent with all of us, and as she reminisced, she often told us she wished she could turn back time to when we were all little girls and boys.
Nena was a woman of faith. She endured hardships in her life and faced tribulation with tenacity and grace. She had the ability to recognize God’s blessings because she was always mindful of God’s love and presence in her life. She endured offenses against her and because of her immense faith and love for all of us, she always chose forgiveness and mercy over reprisal.
Nena gave relentlessly expecting no reward and often sacrificing of herself without the need for acknowledgement. She loved unconditionally, a true gift of the heart with no strings attached, no assessment of value, and without expectation or reservation, enriching our lives in countless ways. She celebrated living a life where she fully extended herself to others and readily answering the call when someone asked for help. Her generosity knew no bounds.
She loved us unconditionally, embracing our flaws and creating a safe space free from judgment. With empathy, she understood and validated our feelings, recognizing that everyone has their unique journey. Nena accepted each of us for who we are, always fostering an environment of acceptance and love. She had a beautiful soul.
Nena planted deep roots of love in all of us. Roots that are so strong that they dwell within us, no matter where we go. As we all made our way in life, we knew that those roots would guide us back home to Nena’s love, no matter where life took us. She was our refuge during difficult times, the person we turned to in moments of crisis, offering comfort and strength when we felt lost. Nena was our rock, providing unwavering support and encouragement. We are truly blessed to have had her in our lives, and her impact will forever be felt.
We thank the Lord for having blessed us with our Nena. Although Nena has gone to her heavenly home, she will always remain in our hearts. Her legacy of love, compassion, and strength will continue to inspire us every day.
“Those we love don’t go away, they walk beside us every day… unseen, unheard, but always near, still loved, still missed, and very dear.” — Unknown
Nena, we miss you, and we will always love you!
