Lois Porter Alston passed away on December 9th at the age of 91. She was born in Indianola, Iowa, and grew up in Los Angeles, California. Lois graduated from Los Angeles High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from UCLA. She was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority and Alpha Chi Delta (honor society). Lois worked as a social worker for Los Angeles County and later as an interviewer in the Bureau of Occupations at UCLA.
On September 24, 1949, she married Norman Alston at Cathedral Chapel Catholic Church in Los Angeles. They settled in Salt Lake City, Utah, where Norman was a metallurgical engineer. They later moved to Caletones, Chile, and then to El Paso, Texas, with the Phelps Dodge Refining Company.
Mrs. Alston was active in the Woman’s Club of El Paso (Book Club and Arts and Crafts group), Women’s Department of the El Paso Chamber of Commerce, Assistance League of El Paso (where she served as Tuesday Day Manager in the thrift shop for 25 years), Christ Child Society, Roncalli Supper Club, and Women’s Auxiliary of AIME (Mining and Metallurgical Engineers).
Mrs. Alston was preceded in death by her husband, Norman, in 1989. She is survived by her children: Cynthia Nowowiejski (David), Mukilteo, WA; Thomas Alston (Paula), Christiansburg, VA; Kathleen Barcinas (Joe), Riverside, CA; Nancy House (Neil), Puyallup, WA; Robert Alston (Carol), Ennis, TX; Barbara Miller (David), Kirkland, WA; and William Alston (Sandra), Carlsbad, CA. Grandchildren: Tamra Barcinas Cox (Christopher), Jennifer Nowowiejski Presley (David), Christopher Barcinas (Kristin), Amy House, Brian House, Brett Alston, Ann Alston, Claire Alston Walker (Nick), Monica Alston, Grace Alston, Stephanie Miller, Sean Miller, Keegan Alston, and Kallee Alston. Great grandchildren: Brayden Presley, Emily Presley, Henry Walker, and Declan Barcinas.
Rosary Service will be held at 7:00 pm at Martin Funeral Home West, 128 N. Resler Dr., El Paso. Funeral Mass will be Monday, December 15, 2014, at 9:30 am at St. Luke’s Catholic Church, 930 East Redd Road, with Father Richard Sotello officiating. Interment will follow at Fort Bliss National Cemetery. A reception will follow at 12:30 pm at Monte Vista, 1575 Belvidere.
