Leonard "Mac" McCollum, age 85, of Vilas, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on April 10, 2023, surrounded by loved ones. He leaves behind a legacy of service, love, and cherished memories that will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew him.
"Mac" was born on June 29, 1938, to John and Mattie Mae Whitten McCollum in Columbia, LA. After graduating from Abilene High School in 1956, he embarked on a journey marked by dedication and service. Joining the Texas National Guard, Leonard's commitment to duty led him to achieve the rank of Sergeant First Class. He later transitioned to active duty as an Air Defense Artillery Warrant Officer, embarking on a distinguished career that spanned over two decades.
Throughout his military service, "Mac" made significant contributions to various projects and initiatives, including the Sergeant York project, the Nike Hercules project, and the Patriot Missile system. His exemplary leadership and expertise earned him the rank of Master Chief Warrant Officer, CW4, before his honorable retirement.
In his retired years, "Mac" found joy in spending time with his family, watching baseball and sharing his passion for golfing and hunting with grandchildren and close friends.
"Mac" was preceded in death by his beloved parents, John and Mattie McCollum. He is survived by his devoted wife of twenty-seven years, Brenda McCollum of North Carolina, his children Russell McCollum and Ronald McCollum, and their mother Mary McCollum of El Paso, Texas, Anthony Pollygus, and Monica (Jeff) Puckett of Newland, North Carolina. He is also remembered by his grandchildren Levi Pollygus, Mikaela (Matt) Huff, Rick Daniels, Zoe (Levi) McIntosh, and Cody Daniels, along with his great-grandchildren Liam and Monica Mae Huff and Elsie McIntosh. Additionally, "Mac" is survived by his sister, Lydia, and husband Bill Jackson, as well as nephews Randle and Diana Jackson and Steven and Susan Jackson.
