Leland Russell Banister, fondly known as "Russ," peacefully passed away at the age of 87 on July 23. Born on February 26, 1937, in Manhattan, NY, Russ lived a life brimming with purpose, dedication, and love.
Russ is lovingly remembered by his wife Gloria, his children Brad and Denise, Jeffery and Jennifer, Leigh Stevens, Brandon and Elizabeth, and Pam Sapyta, as well as sixteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind his brother John, in-laws Vicky, Bob, and Liz Lashus, and many cherished nephews and nieces.
A proud veteran, Russ served three tours in Vietnam as a code decipherer, earning three Commendation Medals for his exceptional service. His dedication continued stateside, where he excelled as an Army recruiter, earning the USA Gold Recruiter badge for being the top recruiter in the Northeast region. He was also honored to attend the inaugural Army First Sergeant’s course. After a distinguished 21-year military career, Russ shared his expertise as a Jr. ROTC instructor at Parkland and Ysleta H.S.
Russ's commitment to service extended beyond his military career. He was a lifelong member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. For three decades, he volunteered in the UTEP Media Host Room and was a fervent supporter of UTEP athletics.
A memorial gathering for RUSS will be held Monday, August 12, 2024 from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Hillcrest Funeral Home, 1060 North Carolina Dr., El Paso, Texas 79915. A celebration of life will occur Monday, August 12, 2024 at 7:00 PM, 1060 North Carolina Dr., El Paso, Texas 79915. A graveside will occur Tuesday, August 13, 2024 from 1:00 PM to 1:30 PM at Fort Bliss National Cemetery, 5200 Fred Wilson Ave, El Paso, TX 79906. A reception will occur Tuesday, August 13, 2024 at 2:00 PM at The Fiesta Party Hall, 6400 Airport Rd, El Paso, Texas 79925.
