Dr. Kenneth Bruce Shover, P.h.D , died on October 7, 2014. Ken was born on March 29, 1925 in Kansas City, Kansas to John R. Shover and Tressa Shover, and was the youngest of three children. He grew up in Kansas City, Missouri, where he attended elementary school and graduated from Westport High School in 1943. Shortly after high school, Ken was drafted into the U.S. Navy, serving three years and being honorably discharged in 1946. He then returned to Kansas City and enrolled at the University of Kansas where he earned a bachelor's degree in history. Subsequently, he was accepted into the doctoral program at the University of California at Berkeley, where he received a PHD in 1962. Ken taught at Santa Barbara City College for seven years after receiving his doctorate. He then received an appointment to teach history at Texas Western College, now the University of Texas at El Paso, where he taught for 31 years and twice served as chairman of the History Department. He retired in 1993 as Professor Emeritus. Ken was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Dale Shover; sister, Marge Brogan; and grandson David Lavender. Survivors include his wife, Sue Wilson Shover; daughter, Lynn Lavender; grandson, Donald Lavender; sister-in-law, Hilda Shover, her son, Dale and daughter Ami; stepchildren David Foster, Dan Foster, Cindy Lyons Fields and Stephen Foster; and numerous step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A Graveside Service will be held on October 13, 2014 at 10:00AM at Memory Gardens of the Valley Cemetery, 4900 McNutt Rd., Santa Teresa, New Mexico 88008.
