Joseph Theophilus Hicks,SR. was a man who wore many hats -all of which he wore with great honor and pride. Always living by example , he was an acomplished ,educated and caring man. He worked hard ,was extremely proud of his family , and always took intrest in his community. He pledged omega psi phi while attending hampton univesity.He served in the united states army and rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel.He served in the vietnam war and served a korean tour, and travel around the world. But for my dad there was no greater service than his role as loving husband to Angie hicks, father to his children Jody , Kim , and Dustin and also a father figure to Angies son Mike and Jeff,which he always cared for as his own. He was so proud to be a grandfather , he looked on each of his 12 grandchildren and on great grandchild with high hopes for a bright future for each and everyone of them. He was ever so happy to impart his words of wisdom on anyone willing to listen. many of us can tell you , we are glad we took the time to listen because he never steered us wrong. His advice always demonstrated his strong belief in hard work perseverance and having a positive outllook. Qualities he assured us were part of his many recipes for success even during the toughest of times. He always worked to be  a positive role model. A characteristic he aquired early in life as a brother to 5 siblings. Joe had a great love for sports , which of course he did because he was good at about any sport he took up. He was competitive , but again, because he won so often,so not sure how fair it was!But anyway he ran track beat out what became a future olympic decathlon champ Bob Mathias in the 440 and set school records and stae records in the 220 and 440, he lettered in both high school and college in football and track, and was even a low handi cap bowler. But perhaps , his longest love of a sport was golf. He competed and won in many events and was labeled a Scratch golfer which for those familiar with golf know that a scratch golfer is one whose average score for a round of golf is par or better. If that doesnt help you , basically , it means you are a realy good golfer and most people dont wanna play against you. And to top it off he was a great cook and made the best homemade  mac n cheese and the best dressing on thanks giving. He had nicknames from everyone his wife called him jose his kids called him pops or just dad his family back in Delaware called him Thee  neices and nephews from el paso & new mexico called him uncle joe and the grand kids called him papa joe. Basically ,Joe was a man who taught us to fight for what we beleive in, work hard to meet our goals  we set for our selves , never give up and live life to the fullest. He wanted his family united , with all children and grandchildren understanding  and appreciating the impotance of love, family and legacy. He would want us to plan many reunions! For these and many other personal reasons I am sure many of you can call to mind. We honor the long full  and well lived life of Joseph Theophilus Hicks Sr. May he rest in peace. I love you Dad your son
