John A. Muñoz, 69, beloved husband, father and grandfather passed away peacefully on March 9, 2010. He was a lifelong resident of El Paso, TX. He is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 49 years, Aida R. Muñoz, four children, Jon Muñoz (Washington, DC), Mark Muñoz (El Paso, TX), Yvonne Terrazas (El Paso, TX) and Steven Muñoz (El Paso, TX) and three grandchildren Mark Muñoz II, Alyssa Terrazas and Gabriel Terrazas. He is also survived by his brother, Raul Muñoz (El Paso, TX). He was preceded in death by his parents, Juan and Eloisa Muñoz and his brother Roberto Muñoz.
Muñoz was a Regional Director for the United States Small Business Administration for 20 years, where he managed a multi-billion dollar disaster loan portfolio for twenty-four states geographically located west of the Mississippi River, Guam and Puerto Rico.
Muñoz enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1960 and is a veteran of the Vietnam War, where he served on the U.S.S. Bennington and the U.S.S. Lexington. He was a graduate of Burges High School in 1959. He recently celebrated his 50th class reunion. He also graduated from the International Business College as valedictorian of his class.
Muñoz took great pride in his community and was active in numerous civic and advocacy organizations, including the League of United Latin American Citizens and the American Red Cross, where he served on the Board of Directors. He was a member of the Host Committee for the United States, Russia, China and Mexico Olympic Volleyball Team’s visit to El Paso, in 1979. He was also a member of the El Paso Police Department Citizens Advisory Board.
Muñoz was intensely supportive of his children’s interests. He often immersed himself in their activities by taking on leadership roles: Cub Scout Pack Leader, P.T.A. President, 3-time Eastwood High School Band Booster President, softball, baseball, soccer and tennis coach and Soap Box Derby instructor.
Muñoz would say that his family is his greatest source of pride. He loved his family deeply and took great pride in his children and grandchildren.
Visitation will be on Sunday, March 14, 2010 from 5:00 to 9:00 P.M. in the Chapel of Funeraria Del Angel Martin East with recitation of the Rosary to begin at 7:00 P.M. Funeral Mass for Mr. Muñoz will be Monday, March 15, 2010 at 1:15 P.M. at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 1050 N. Clark Rd. Interment will follow at Ft. Bliss National Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Jon Muñoz, Mark Muñoz, Mark Muñoz II, Raul Muñ̃oz, Steven Muñoz, Peter Sayotovich and Jonathan Terrazas. Honorary pallbearers will be Luis Arrieta, Jr., Arturo Castro, Daniel Muñoz, Roberto Muñoz, Jr. and Joe Villescas. The Muñoz family will receive relatives and friends at the El Paso Comedy Club, 1201 Airway Blvd. immediately after the burial service.
