Jeanne A. Moon, 91, beloved Mother and Grandmother, passed away March 10, 2010 in El Paso. Jeanne was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada on October 15, 1918 to Shoichi and Haruyu Ito, who had a Japanese restaurant. She graduated from Britannia H.S. in Vancouver in 1936 and later earned a Master of Science of Cosmetology from the Maxine College of Beauty culture in Vancouver in 1939. While visiting Japan the first time with her family in 1941, she and her family were detained in Japan for the duration of WWII. After the war ended, she worked as an interpreter for the U.S. Miltiary Occupation forces in Kure where she met her future husband, Fred, who was servng in the U.S. Army. They were married at the American Consulate in Yokohama in 1947 and then were reassigned to the U.S. They had a son, Frederick, and daughter, Madalin while Fred completed a career in the Army. Jeanne and Fred had a very devoted marriage of 58 years until Fred's death in 2005. Jeanne was an ardent volunteer all of her life, actively supporting her children's school Parent Teacher Organization and providing extensive volunteer hours to a number of clubs and the AU.S. Army Air Defense School Allied Students Host Family program. She provided long years of service to numerous organizations, often as President, to include the Skyline Garden Club, the Desert Hills Garden Club, the El Paso Chapter of Ikebana International, the Womens Club of El Paso, the El Paso del Norte Chapter of the Gold Star Wives of America, the Society of Military Widows, and Daughters of the British Empire. Jeanne was a Nationally Accredited Flower Show Judge and traveled to other cities to provide her expertise. A long standing member of the Ikebana International Society, she was a certified instructor in the three schools of Ikebana. As a strong supporter of the Allied Students Host Family program for many years and eventually serving as Chairman of the Program, she was recognized on many occasions. She is one of few civilians to be inducted into the Royal Order of Saint Barbara. Jeanne was preceded in death by her husband, Fred, her parents, sister Nancy Hasegawa, and brother Ken Ito. She is survived by her son, Fred and his wife Peggy of Arlington, Texas and their daughters Kelly and Bonnie; and daughter, Madalin Torretta and her husband Lou of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho and their sons Luke, John, and Matthew and adopted son Tyler Powers. Her cremains will be interred with those of her husband, Fred, in the National Cemetery of the Pacific in Hawaii. Memorial service at the Ft. Bliss Center Chapel #1 at 2 pm Thursday March 18th.
