Born to Leo and Joy Hines in El Paso Texas, Jane Hines Thomson was a self-described lively and creative child. She attended Dudley Elementary and El Paso High School. She later attended St. Mary of the Woods in Indiana and UTEP.
She met the love of her life, Lionel Walter (Wally) Thomson in 1949 on a blind date to a dance and they were married November 22, 1951 at St. Patrick’s Cathedral.
After the birth of their first son, Wally Jr., they moved to Hawaii where Wally was stationed as a Naval Officer on a Destroyer. She couldn’t wait to get back to El Paso when Wally resigned his commission. There they completed their family with sons Patrick, Tommy and Michael and daughter Ann. Jane was thrilled to be the mother of her large and boisterous family. She and Wally were married 71 wonderful years and she loved telling anyone, including nurses, grocery store clerks and passerby how long they had been married.
Jane was naturally artistic from an early age and excelled in pencil drawing with no formal art education. She expanded her creativity to nature photography and then to her beautiful calligraphy. She was very active in the El Paso Calligraphy Guild and loved going with her fellow calligraphers to Ghost Ranch where she honed her craft and produced many beautiful works of art.
Jane was not only very artistic, she was also active in the community, volunteering with El Paso Junior League, Pan American Roundtable, the St. Patrick’s Altar Society and the St. Patrick’s Choir. She and Wally served several years together on the St. Patrick’s Funeral Ministry, ministering to countless families during a difficult time.
Most of all, Jane loved her family and we cherished every minute we had with her. She was the family matriarch, a gracious hostess who taught us all the importance of manners and setting a beautiful table. She was generous in all things, and resolutely faithful and supportive of her family, no matter the celebration or disappointment. She delighted especially in her grandchildren and great grandchildren, playing tea party with them in the playhouse. She was devoted to Wally and to her Lord and Savior, whom she trusted completely until her last breath.
Jane is survived by her husband, Lionel Walter Thomson, sons Lionel Walter Thomson Jr. and wife Wendy Thomson, Patrick Thomson and wife Shawna Thomson, Michael Thomson, and daughter in law Patricia Thomson, 11 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by son Thomas Richard Thomson, daughter Ann Thomson Weathers, son-in-law David Weathers and grandson Dale Weathers.
A private service is being planned by the family.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to St. Patrick’s Cathedral.
