Gerald "Jerry" Elliott Hill, 69, passed away on Sunday, March 26, 2023, from complications due to COVID. He is survived by his wife of nearly 45 years, Ruth Hill, and his two daughters, Poppy Davis and Katie Nelson, and grandchildren Caitlin and Ian Nelson. Jerry is preceded in death by parents Harold and Geraldine Hill, older brother Shawn Hill, son Jubal Hill, niece Rose Hill and brother-in-law Wally Baucom.
Jerry was born August 17, 1953, in Monterey, CA, and the military family moved to El Paso in the early sixties. Jerry attended St. Joseph’s School and Cathedral High School before receiving his degree in Civil Engineering from Notre Dame in 1975. Jerry met Ruth in 1978, declared it love at first sight, and wholeheartedly welcomed her two young children, Poppy and Jubal, as his own. Katie was born in 1979, after which the family settled back in El Paso. Jerry was an avid fisherman, music and animal lover, and had a deep affection for El Paso; he was Superintendent to the construction crew that built the El Paso History Museum, which he considered one of his greatest professional accomplishments.
For over 20 years, Jerry was a volunteer and member of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), teaching courses to families and loved ones of those coping with mental health conditions, receiving the Joan Cherno Service Award in 2018 for his profound impact. He will be remembered as a sentimental, kind and generous man who made friends easily and loved his family deeply; he was exceptionally good natured in his acceptance of the never-ending teasing from his wife and kids, and he was grateful for time spent with them. Jerry will be missed beyond words.
His service will be held at St. Joseph’s Church, 3729 Hueco Avenue, Friday, May 12, at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider donation to NAMI El Paso, P.O. Box 9771, El Paso, TX 79995 or The Animal Rescue League, P.O. Box 13055, El Paso, TX 79913.
