Our mother and best friend Elfida left us on Thursday, November 5th to be with Our Lord and Savior. Our mother Elfida, age 90, was born in San Elizario, Texas and resided in Socorro, Texas. She was preceded in death by her mother Eulogia T. Perez, her father, Ysidro Perez, husband, Antonio Chavez and husband, Pedro C. Romero, and sister, Frances Apodaca. Our mother graduated from Ysleta High School. She began her working career at Beaumont Army Medical Center where she became the Secretary to the Judge Advocate. She then became the medical stenographer to the Director of the hospital. In 1971 she was licensed for Nursing Home Administrator and was in charge of Sunset Haven Nursing Home and retired from the Veterans Administration where she was the Administrative Assistant to the Director. She was on the Socorro School Board for 14 years and was the driving force behind the formation of Socorro High School and named the school mascot, Socorro Bulldogs. Her dedication and service were recognized in having Elfida P. Chavez Elementary School named in her honor. She was in the Older El Pasoans Hall of Fame Mayor’s Advisory Board on Aging. Elfida was a Eucharistic Minister, taught confirmation classes and pre-baptismal and marriage preparation classes at Santo Nino Catholic Church and San Jose Catholic Church. She is survived by her son, Tony Chavez, daughters, Cynthia Rodriguez (Ronald) and Gina Irwin. Sisters, Adelina P. Rodriguez and Bertha P. Duran. Also numerous nieces, nephews and many beloved friends. Visitation: 5:00-9:00pm on Tuesday, November 10, 2015 at Hillcrest Funeral Home-Carolina with Vigil at 6:00pm.
