Dora Estella Smith, a devoted servant, veteran, and beloved member of the El Paso community, passed away on March 25, 2025, in El Paso, Texas. She was born on June 19, 1953, in the same city that would remain her lifelong home.
Dora led a life marked by service—to her country, her faith, and those around her. She proudly served in the United States Navy as a Radioman Third Class and retired on October 1, 1993. Following her military career, she continued her commitment to public service through her work with the United States Postal Service until her retirement.
Education was another cornerstone of Dora’s life. She earned a Bachelor's degree in Multidisciplinary Studies from the University of Texas at El Paso and went on to receive a Master's degree in Theology from Loyola University. Her academic pursuits reflected her deep spiritual convictions and desire to serve others through faith.
A devout Catholic and dedicated parishioner of St. Raphael Catholic Church, Dora lived out her beliefs through action. She ministered to the sick both in hospitals and at home as part of the Eucharistic ministry. Her compassion extended beyond traditional boundaries—she also visited those incarcerated to share the Word of God and offered support to individuals facing hardship or poverty. Dora’s unwavering commitment to helping others was a defining feature of her life.
She is lovingly remembered by her sons, Luis A. Carrillo Jr. and Howard O. Mancillas; and by her grandsons Julian A. Carrillo, Sebastian M. Carrillo, and Elijah G. Carrillo. Dora was preceded in death by her husband, Luis A. Carrillo.
Those who knew Dora will remember her as a considerate soul who always prayed for others and never hesitated to lend a helping hand. Her love for animals was evident in the way she cared for every dog she ever owned—and rescued many more who needed a home.
An avid runner with an indomitable spirit, Dora completed five full marathons over the years—a testament to her strength and perseverance. She was also a passionate fan of the Dallas Cowboys and held deep pride for Ysleta High School, cherishing every friendship formed there throughout her life.
