Born in 1930 in Charlestown, MA, the city of the Bunker Hill monument. Youngest of eight children of Charles and Margaret Hughes. He joined the U.S. Army with the rank of Recruit and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel after 22 years of service. Following retirement, he attended UTEP and received Bachelor and Masters degrees in Education. He then worked for Region XIX Education Service Center and retired as Media Director. Although proud of his own service, he was especially proud of his five brothers who served in the Navy and a sister who served in the Marines during World War II.
As a graduate of Infantry Officer Candidate School, he was most proud of his service as a young Infantry Platoon Leader during the Korean War and as a Green Beret in Vietnam. Although he received the Bronze Star for Valor in Korea and many other decorations, to include the Legion of Merit, he cherished his two awards of the Combat Infantry Badge.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Glenda, who graduated from North Texas State College (now UNT) and taught elementary school in the Ysleta ISD until retirement. Also survived by sons, Don (Becky) and LtCol USMC Ret. Robert (Shannon). He was preceded in death by his parents and all seven siblings: Charles (Ruth), William (Mildred), Paul (Mary, who resides in Vermont at the age of 101), Margaret Boyle (Arthur), Dorothy Covino (Nicholas), Robert (Mary Ann) and John (Mary). He is also survived by three grandchildren Travis, Tyler (Caitlin), and Gregory, along with numerous nieces and nephews. Although a faithful weekly attendant at Catholic Mass, he requested that only graveside services be held with family.
