Doctor The Chevelier Robert Tor Lofberg BS, MS, PhD, KSMA. KSE died in El Paso, Texas on July 30, 2013 at the age of 90. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Colonel (USAF /Ret.) Maureen (O’Brien) Lofberg; son Fredrick (Kathleen); grandchildren Gretchen Thomas (Ensign USN Jay). Adam and Eric all of Maryland; nieces Kathy Beezley (Jerry) and Carin Ozmun (Harry) both of California; inlaws Allan O’Brien (Barbara) of Arizona; and Sheila O’Brien Katz of El Paso and numerous grand nieces and nephews. Dr. Lofberg is predeceased by his parents Fritiof and Josephine (Kaufman) Lofberg, siblings Lawerence, Nils, and Adele Mauerhofer (Gustive) and his first wife Christine.
Dr. Lofberg was a member of the American College of Heraldry where his family crest is registered. He was confered the rank of Knight with chain by Tsarista Maria of Russa, two Papal knighthoods by Pope John Paul II, a member in good standing rank in the Imperial Society of St. George of Lalibela by Prince Ermias of Ethiopa and as an Honorary Cavaliero by Dom Duarte, Duke of Braganca. He holds the hereditary rank of Viscount in Sweden.
Dr. Lofberg earned his BS with honors at Heidelberg College, Tiffin, Ohio (1945); a Masters of Science with honors at New Mexico Highlands University (1956) and a Doctor of Philosophy with honors at The University of New Mexico (1958). He has been a continuous member of the Society of Sigma Xi, New Mexico Chapter, since May 1958. He was serving as Chairman of the Department of Biomedical Research, Walter Reed Army Medical Research Laboratory at the time of his retirement in Washington, D.C.
He was a life member of the American Chemical Society, American Legion, Blind Veterans Association, Disabled American Veterans and had a Hereditary Perpetual Membership in The Military Order of the World Wars. He served his country honorably during World War II as an infantryman.
His family thanks the staff at Ambrosio Guillen Texas State Veterans Home, William Beaumont Army Medical Center, Mays Foster Home and Choice Hospice for his health care over the last few months of his life.
