Cindy Phillips, 52, beloved wife, mother and grandmother, was called home to our Lord on Friday, May 6, after a brief time in Hospice care in Houston, Texas. A resident of Horizon City since 1994, she was born in El Paso on August 24, 1958, to L. J. “Bud” Goodwin and Judy Shumate Goodwin.
Cindy graduated from Wayland Baptist University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education in 1980 and later added a Special Education endorsement. At the time of her passing, she was teaching for the Socorro ISD at the John Drugan School.
Cindy was married to Wesley Phillips on December 30, 1977 and was active as a member, teacher and pastor’s wife in several churches including the Sherwood Baptist Church of Odessa, Texas, and the First Baptist Church of Horizon City, Texas. She was preceded in death by her brother, James Goodwin, of Roswell, New Mexico.
She is survived by her husband, Pastor Wes Phillips of Horizon City, Texas, grandmother, Gloria Shumate of Leander, Texas, parents, Bud and Judy Goodwin of Horizon City, Texas, sister Naomi Smith and husband Mike of Lubbock, Texas. She is also survived by her five children: son, Capt. Daniel Phillips and his wife Jessie of El Paso, Texas; daughter, Nicole Matsuda and her husband Kenta of Horizon City, Texas; son, Jonathan Phillips and his wife Kimberly of Lubbock, Texas; daughter, Jennifer Chacon and her husband Oscar of Springdale, Arkansas and son, Matthew Phillips. Cindy was blessed and greatly invested in her six grandchildren who knew her as “GiGi.”
The Phillips Family will receive relatives and friends on Thursday, May 12, 2011 from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm at Funeraria Del Angel Martin East Funeral Home, 1460 George Dieter, El Paso, TX. Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 13, 2011 at 1:30 pm at Cielo Vista Church, 3585 Lee Trevino, El Paso, TX, with interment to follow at Evergreen Cemetery East, 12400 Montana Avenue, El Paso, TX.
