

Charles “Pete” was born January 7th, 1944, in Morristown, New Jersey to Paul Petersen and Anne (Kennedy) Petersen. Upon graduating from Parsippany Hills High School in 1962, he entered into military service in the United States Army. He had an illustrious 26-year military career where he served with distinction in two tours of Vietnam. He achieved the rank of Sergeant Major and retired as the 5th Army Inspector General Sergeant Major. He is the recipient of numerous medals for valor, bravery and meritorious service. He was awarded one of the highest honors reserved for General Officers, the Legion of Merit. He also earned 2 Bronze Stars, 3 Meritorious Service Medals, 3 Army Commendation medals and 12 additional commendations for his dedication and bravery. On July 17, 1965 he married Maria Petersen and celebrated 55 years of a loving marriage.
He is survived by his wife Maria, and sons Michael (Kimberly) and David (Samantha). He is also survived by his brother Paul (Connie) and Larry. He leaves behind 5 grandchildren; Soren, Sabine, Anjali, Jonah, and Lilliana.
He had a passion for helping others and lived a purpose driven life around service and his faith. His success in the military and in life are attributed to his strong work ethic and natural problem-solving abilities. He was known for his quick wit and compassionate loving spirit.
Charles was preceded in death by his father, Paul, his mother, Anne and sister Nancy. A Facebook live stream of a rosary service will be held on Wednesday, November 4th 2020. He will be buried with full military honors at Ft. Bliss National Cemetery on Thursday, November 5th 2020.
