Charles Mack Hoover, age 76, on Tuesday July 23rd, 2024, after 4 ½ months of multiple hospitalizations, Charles joined his mother, father, sister, brother, and oldest son on his final journey to Heaven.
Charles (Charlie) was born to Moses Mack Hoover and Maxine Cullipher Hoover on May 11th, 1948, at Southwestern General Hospital in El Paso Texas. Charles was the oldest of three children followed by his brother Ben Hoover, and sister Monica (Yvette) Hoover Ziegler. Charles grew up attending Mesita Elementary, El Paso High for eighth grade, and 9th-12th grade at Coronado High School.
In Charlie’s younger years, he was known for getting in trouble and was always looking for a “good fight.” He and his buddies, Ty Grimes and Joe Tout found a way to get it out of their system, by watching each other’s back. Charles was a member of the first graduating class of Coronado High School of “1966” where he played Football and Baseball. Charles belonged to a group of guys that called themselves the “Lummi’s” consisting of Mishu Lopez, Michael Hiett, Tom Korpolski, Bobby Zimmerman, Barry Hale, Joe Veale, and David Chavez. They were inseparable.
Upon graduating from High School, Charles was awarded a baseball scholarship to attend UTEP. Shortly after starting college, Charles sustained an ankle injury that would haunt him for the rest of his life. Charles lost the scholarship and then began an extensive career of surveying for the El Paso Natural Gas Company, working for various surveyor groups such as Basil Smith Engineering and the Williams Company, which landed him working various jobs throughout the Western United States.
Charles also worked with Ron King and the Skyline Engineering group surveying the Santa Teresa Country Club area as he continued to learn the trade of surveying. Not only did Charles survey the Santa Teresa Country Club area but golfed there every Sunday morning for many years with his brother Ben, Ron King and the Erramouspe’s, where he got his very first and only “hole in one”. As a part of his adventures in surveying he and “Duffy Rivera” would fly helicopters around the southwest, surveying the area for pipelines for the El Paso Natural Gas Company.
While Charles was out living in Washington state working for the gas company and with his dear friend Jim “Jimbo” Bowron, Charles met and married his first wife Debra Knight on November 9th, 1970. Shortly after that, they moved back to El Paso and on May 24th, 1973, their first son Cory Charles Hoover was born at Hotel Dieu Hospital here in El Paso Texas. On November 20th, 1976, their second son, Tyson Michael Hoover was born at Sierra Medical Center. Charles gave Tyson the middle name of Michael named after Michael Hiett, who remained Charles dear friend and “Brother” to the end. Tyson was his father’s pride and joy, as Tyson pursued a 30-year career in the Navy and also brought into our family an amazing daughter-in-law Jennifer and only grandson Grant Evan Hoover.
In the late 70’s, the family moved to Grand Junction Colorado and Charles and Debra, and the boys started making new friends such as the “Clarks” and began camping, water skiing and snow skiing any chance they could get. Charles loved the outdoors and loved to encourage his boys to be adventurous and risk takers just like he was.
After living in Grand Junction Colorado for approximately 10 years, Charles made the decision to move back to El Paso to help his brother Ben expand the Hoover Masonry Business and grow it into an amazing and well-respected sub-contractor Masonry company, where Charles served as the Vice President until his retirement in 2010.
Charles and Debra divorced in 1990. In September of 1993, one night while Ben and Charlie were “Out on the Town” Charlie and Nancy met at “Papa’s Cantina” on North Mesa. Shortly thereafter, their first date was seeing the movie “The Fugitive” and Dinner at “Billy Crews.” After several trips to Green Bay, Wisconsin to meet Nancy’s father and family, he was welcomed into the family with open arms.
After dating for 7 years, on July 29th, 2000, Nancy and Charles were married in Las Vegas and celebrated with over one hundred family members and friends at the Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino.
Through the years, Charles and Nancy have also enjoyed attending numerous concerts with their dear friends, Carol Sheldon, Ric Huerta, Alicia Palmer, and many other friends and even driving up to Phoenix, Tucson, or Albuquerque to catch a concert with their old friend Craig Hays. Not only was listening to music and playing his six guitars a huge part of his life, but Charles also loved sports…… Going to miner games and tailgating with our dear friends Dee and Johnny Cramer, watching the Green Bay Packers on television and also attending Packer Games at Lambeau Field.
There was even a period of time for about 10 years that we never missed a chance to go up to Durango Colorado on the Harley and ride the four corners area or venture over to California and cruise the Pacific Coast Highway or attend the “Love Ride” with his childhood friend Joe Tout. Charlie and Nancy loved to travel and visited Hawaii, Alaska and much of the United States.
Charlie was a man that was loved by many and when he entered the room people gravitated to him because of his infectious smile, kind heart and generous soul. His running buddies “The three Amigos”, Charles, Bruce Nolen and Craig Hays used to go to lunch every Tuesday with “The Boys” and they would go cruising and check out the new construction in town and see how the city was growing. When Charlie got sick back in March, they no longer could take their afternoon rides to check out “job sites” or “new restaurants.” It just was not the same without Charles.
On March 8th of this year, the Charlie we all knew was still physically here, but his medical condition had declined to the point that he could no longer do the things he loved to do. On March 22, 2024, the Lord also took his oldest son Cory Charles Hoover from us, leaving yet another huge hole in our hearts.
Charles is preceded in death by his mother, Maxine Cullipher Hoover; father, Moses Mack Hoover; brother, Benny Dale Hoover; sister, Monica (Yvette) Hoover Ziegler; and son, Cory Charles Hoover. Charles is survived by his wife Nancy Peters; son, Tyson Michael Hoover (Jennifer); and grandson, Grant Evan Hoover. He is also survived by nieces Kirsten Hoover Claridge (Cash) and Megan Ziegler; nephews, Brian Hoover (Laura) and Todd Ziegler (Jessica) and numerous cousins and family in Arkansas.
