On Sunday, June 13, 2021 after battling with many illnesses, it is with great sorrow that Carlos Sermeno also known as Charlie and Tally passed away at the age of 80. He was a beloved and loving husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his wife Josephine B. Sermeno (Josie) of 53 years, his daughter Yvonne Sermeno (Bonnie) and granddaughter Kaitlynn Santos, his son Carlos David Sermeno Sr., his wife Cristina M. Sermeno and grandchildren Carlos David Sermeno Jr., Nathan Daniel Sermeno, and Samara Nevaeh Sermeno, his three sisters-Mary T. Gamez, Josie Leal, and Stella Naudin. Including his favorite niece Margie Carrillo and her husband Albert Carrillo. Carlos was loved by many friends and neighbors.
Carlos graduated from UTEP with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in May of 1973, and with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice in August of 1976. Carlos retired after 23 years of service from the El Paso Police Department on May 13, 1988. First starting as a patrolman and then as a Detective of the Juvenile Division.
After his retirement, Carlos began the Communities first in Schools Drug-Free Program with the Ysleta Independent School District. Carlos later worked as a teacher at Father Yermo School. Finally, Carlos ended his working career as a substitute teacher for the El Paso Independent School District (Burgess and Bowie High School). Carlos was very dedicated and devoted to the Riverside youth in his community. Carlos had a very special love for Riverside High School. Part of Carlos’s service to his community was working security for the Friday night Football Games. Carlos was a people person, who was well loved by everyone he met. When he wasn’t working, Carlos spent his time coaching his men’s softball team, and coaching a youth city league football team called the Raiders. Carlos was proud to be a former Paratrooper in the United States Army 82nd Airborne Division. Carlos also served as a member and one term President of the Benavidez-Patterson Airborne Chapter. Carlos was a huge sports fan!
His three favorite teams were the Oakland/Los Angeles/Las Vegas Raiders, the Golden State Warriors, and Chivas de Guadalajara.
One of his favorite times of the year was Halloween; he very much looked forward to and enjoyed giving out candy and glow sticks to all the kids (the trick or treaters as he called them) in his neighborhood.
Many sincere Thanks to all the nurses and doctors who cared for him throughout these difficult past years. Specifically, Liz Robles and Daniel Roa who both were always there for our family.
